Bastille – April 7, 2014 – Commodore Ballroom
The Commodore Ballroom was bursting with energy as a sold out audience awaited Bastille to take the stage. The four-piece appeared on a dark stage to the ethereal Twin Peaks theme. Then the lights burst on as the band broke into “Bad Blood” amidst huge applause. Lead singer Dan Smith’s high energy was surely boosted by the youthful energy of the audience as the all bounced and danced to the set.
An act of few words, when they did speak they seemed genuinely impressed with Vancouver, having been in the city a couple of days prior to the show, and appreciative of their fans as they closed out their Canadian Tour.
Touring on the back of their 2013 debut album “Bad Blood” and recently reissued version “All This Bad Blood”, the 70 minute set included their singles “Laura Palmer”, “Overjoyed”, “Things We Lost In The Fire”, “Flaws”, “Of The Night” and “Pompeii”. While some of their other tracks suffer from a bit of sameness, making them interchangeable, the diverse singles especially the later trio were very audibly received by the audience with Smith roaming through the audience while singing “Flaws”. Then during the encore, “Of The Night” required the audience to participate by ‘getting down’ (literally crouching down to the floor) and “getting up” (leaping up) between much dancing. The finale “Pompeii” included opening act To Kill A King coming onstage to sing along too.
