Located in the Hilton Vancouver Airport Hotel, CAVU Kitchen Bar is a hidden gem in the heart of Richmond. Surrounded by a plethora of malls and asian eateries, CAVU offers guests and locals an unexpected change from the usual airport hotel fare.
Recently renovated to create a modern, upscale restaurant with adjoining lounge located just off lobby, CAVU has a variety of seating; high or low tables, communal long tables, allowing for a quiet meal by a window, a working lunch or a group gathering around the bar.
We happened into CAVU when we were without dinner plans on New Year’s Eve and were pleasantly surprised with a beautifully prepared, flavourful and budget friendly 5 course prix fixe menu. At $39 for the meal, we were started with an amuse bouche of a Vancouver Island oyster followed by the choice of two tasty starters; Caprese Moderno salad; gem tomatoes, roasted peppers, broccolini, goat cheese & pesto dressing or Smoked Squash Puree; blended spaghetti squash and granny smith apples served with jalepeno cornbread.
A intermezzo of lime sorbet cleansed the palate for the main courses. Billy chose Surf & Turf; a nicely presented and well prepared grilled sirloin and garlic herb prawns with vegetables and potatoes. I had the Wild Sockeye; broiled skin-on fish with vegetables, asian rice cakes in a soy mirin sauce. The fish had a couple of bones left in and suffered from a bit too much of the salty soy mirin sauce but both our entrees were very nice. There was also a vegetarian option of Charred Eggplant Canneloni that we didn’t opt for but sounded good too.
While we were reaching our fill, the Dessert Trio of strawberry gelato, vanilla brule and chocolate crunch bar, was just the right size to top off our meal with something sweet.
The set menu was a great way to try out a selection of what’s offered at CAVU Kitchen Bar and entice us to think about stopping in again when in Richmond.
