Today marks the beginning of the Chinese New Year 4709, also known as Lunar New Year or Spring Festival. In the Chinese Zodiac this marks the year of the Dragon, the sign for those born in years, 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, 2012. This is also the year of the Water Dragon, each year is also associated with one of five rotating elements so this year is is especially significant for those born in 1952 as well as this year.
The Dragon is the strongest of all signs in the Zodiac. Dragons characterize such traits as dominance and ambition. Dragons are independent and if left on their own, are usually successful. Driven, unafraid of challenges, and willing to take risks, they’re passionate in all they do and they do things in grand fashion. However, their passion and enthusiasm can leave Dragons feeling exhausted and unfulfilled.
New Year celebrations take place across the globe, not just in Asian countries but also right here at home. In Vancouver, we have plenty of celebrations and traditions, many of them are free of change and welcome all families. Chinatown and International Village Mall are the centre of the action next weekend with Year of the Dragon Celebrations at International Village, Chinatown Spring Festival Celebration at the Plaza at Sun Yat-Sen Gardens, wrapping up the weekend is the Chinese New Year Parade.
Wear something red, gather the family and come down to Chinatown for some fun and excitement.
