Canada’s largest multicultural health fair takes place at Vancouver’s Croatian Cultural Centre next Saturday March 9, 2013. Presented in dozens of languages to welcome Vancouver’s varied cultural communities to attend, the Diversity Health Fair is a free of charge event, featuring wellness activities for the whole family. Celebrating its 9th year, the theme of this year’s Fair is Chronic Disease Prevention.
“Approximately half of all Canadians are living with at least one chronic health condition, and more than one in four Canadians report having two or more chronic conditions” {Health Council of Canada (May 2012) Self-management support for Canadians with chronic health conditions: A focus for primary health care}.
The 2013 Vancouver Diversity Health Fair features 50+ health and wellness exhibitors and includes many activities throughout the day. Healthy cooking demonstrations from local chefs, performances featuring Zumba Vancouver, Estilo Cubano, Move It! Joe Ink and Interactive Drumming with Red Fox Society, a healthy Family Activity Zone with More Sports, Gymnastics BC, Golf BC, Participaction: Bring Back Play, Vancouver Parks and Recreation.
There is also free onsite health screenings from Vancouver Coastal Health (blood pressure, BMI/waist circumference, CanRisk assessment, physical therapist, ask a Nurse/Dietician, fitness testing, STOP HIV AIDS screening). With the availability of onsite bilingual volunteers assisting visitors in Punjabu, Cantonese, Mandarin, Farsi, Tagalog, Korean and more, it’s a great opportunity for new Canadians to access health care. A new feature this year is a Food Truck Cafe with Guanaco Food Truck, Soho Road Naan Kebab, Dim Sum Express and music by RJ1200
