Coming up June 5th, Food Talks Vol. 1 is the first in a summer series of social gatherings bringing speakers of diverse backgrounds and roles in the food community. It’s an opportunity for food enthusiasts to meet and mingle while listening and learning from a great selection of speakers.
The Volume 1 speakers include:
Chef Trevor Bird is currently appearing on Top Chef Canada, and since Food Talks is on the day after the season finale, he could be crowned Top Chef. The former chef de partie at Shangri-la Hotel Vancouver recently opened his own Fable Kitchen in Kitsilano.
Author Stephanie Yeun is writer of cookbook East Meets West, which is a celebration of Vancouver’s Asian food, compiling some of the distinctive dishes from the city’s most talented—but often unheralded—kitchens. As a food journalist she writes for Edible Canada and What’s On magazine, contributes to the Vancouver Sun, frequently appears on radio and TV and blogs about Asian food at beyondchopsticks.com.
Vancouver Aquarium’s Mike McDermid, Ocean Wise Manager for the aquarium’s conservation program created to educate and empower consumers about issues surrounding sustainable seafood. Working directly with restaurants and markets to help them make ocean-friendly buying decisions based on the most current scientific information, and provides an easily recognizable eco-logo to mark these products.
Hunter J Moyles is chef and event organizer at Vancouver’s hip Waldorf Hotel as well as organizing and assisting numerous NGO’s over the years. Chef Moyles is about to launch a Non-profit Organization called The Tiffin Project, with a group of restaurants in Vancouver, who’d like to see if they can try to phase out TO GO packaging in their businesses while raising money to subsidize their purchasing of local ingredients at the same time.
Roberta LaQuaglia is the Operations Manager for Vancouver Farmers Markets (VFM), a non-profit society that brings locally produced food to urban consumers through the creation of pop-up plazas of commerce across the city. A ‘Jane-of-all-trades’ Roberta collaborates with vendors, staff, volunteers, community members and site hosts to meet the needs of all market stakeholders and when needed, she can also be found toting tents, hoisting tables & patrolling parking as one of the market crew.
Presented by VancouverFoodster.com, the event takes place at W2 Media Cafe with each speaker presenting a short talk followed by a Q & A session to give guests a chance to engage with the speakers. Tickets include a glass wine, entry into the draw for prizes and sweet treat parting gift from one of Vancouver’s bakeries.
Food Talks supports Growing Chefs an organization that educates children on the food community in the public schools, $3 from each Food Talks ticket is being donated to the charity.
Food Talks Vol. 1 takes place Tuesday June 5th from 7pm – 9pm at W2 Media Cafe and Community Media Arts Centre, 111 West Hastings, Vancouver.
Tickets are available via Eventbrite: $30 per person before June 1st. $40 per person after June 1st. Tickets are limited and must be purchased in advance.
