Il Volo – Orpheum Theatre – August 25, 2013
Italian popera trio, Il Volo kicked off their headlining “We Are Love Tour” at the Orpheum Theatre in Vancouver last night. Supporting their November 2012 release “We Are Love” the trio of Piero Barone(20), Ignazio Boschetto (18) and Gianluca Ginoble (18) are still riding the high from backing Barbra Streisand on tour last year, appearances on American Idol and are now making the most of the recognition to carve their own niche.
Kicking off their 20 date Canada/US tour (which is followed by another 22 shows in Latin America) at Vancouver’s elegant Orpheum Theatre was a perfect venue for their elegant vocals and classic matinee idol good looks, like a mashup of The Jonas Brothers and The Three Tenors. Starting with “Questo Amore” (“Don’t Want To Miss A Thing” in Italian), the 2 hour set included a mix of contemporary songs and classical standards in English, Italian, Spanish and French. The three young men who have vocal range beyond their years each performed a couple of solos in between the group numbers, the audience was enthralled, leaping to their feet after many numbers. The audience also enjoyed the witty banter and occasional stumbles over English words, Ignazio proving to be the most playful one of the trio. Going back and forth between languages and classical and contemporary kept the set lively and meant there was something for everyone to enjoy. Even if you didn’t know the words or know the song there was no doubting that these performers were astounding talents. “Beautiful Day”, “Splendida”, “Angel”, “Surrender” and “Maria” filled out the set list. They paid tribute to Barbra Streisand before Ignazio’s solo version of “Memory”, Frank Sinatra before Gianluca sang “Night & Day”, also the group spotlighted Placido Domingo when singing “Il Canto”, their duet with the maestro.
Although it’s only been just over 3 years since they met on the Italian TV talent show Ti Lascio Una Canzone, their stage and vocal chemistry is perfect, no wonder the judges put them together as a trio to sing their final song of the night “O Sole Mio”.
There’s still time to catch Il Volo when the “We Are Love Tour” comes to your town.

I’m so pleased to read of the success the boys had in Vancouver. I will be at the Sleep Train Pavilion and will get to meet them in person. I am hoping that I can Mame it through today. I am 67 years old and might hyperventilate when I meet therm especially GUANLUCA.my kids treated me to this wonderful event. My two sisters & a friend (all of us are SENIORS)
but still LOVE these singers with incredible VOICES. THEY ARE ALSO SO VERY! VERY EASY TO LOOK AT.
I am very glad that the boys’ new tour is off to such a roaring start! I will be seeing them in two weeks in Montreal, I can’t wait! I commend you on writing this article, Mr. Minter. Thank you for giving us such an insightful and perceptive understanding of the incredibly talented voices these tre ragazzi possess, and for knowing they sing pop-opera, NOT opera at all. After reading the review by Erika Thorkelson, it’s a wonder what show she actually saw last night! She is entitled to her opinion but to denigrate and having no clue as to who these 3 guys are, the type of music they sing, it’s obvious she didn’t bother doing even basic research. It’s very refreshing to know that there’s someone who actually gets what these 3 amazing young men are all about, and has an actual clue as to their backgrounds, and can fully appreciate their charm, warmth, wit and banter. Thank goodness for the likes of Il Volo, it’s so wonderful to have young men who can actually sing, they are one of a handful (or 2) of performers that can rely solely on their unique, pure, amazing and incredible voices. They certainly don’t need artifice, sensationalism, flashy, skimpy costumes or shock-value performances to make their mark. They’ll do it on their raw talent alone. I mean Barbra invited them on her tour last Fall… I think, that’s a pretty rousing endorsement, right there.
This Erika Thorkelson, when did she ever heard or read anywhere where the boys said they were OPERA SINGERS? They always said they do not sing opera. They do not sing rap or any of those kind of music other than their own style. Thank goodness that they don’t. Where did this reviewer get that idea that she was reviewing an Opera show. She is entitled to her opinion but please, make sure you know what you’re talking about before you bash these guys. They are three of very few young entertainers today who actually sing and so beautifully may I add, without the help of autotune. They do it with their own lovely voices. Hope she doesn’t review a other show until she does her homework. She must be a ROOKIE?
.
Bravo for all of the above comments. I totally agree Ms Thorkelson really needs to do her homework. The boys were amazing as usual. There talent is unparalleled.
