After a premiere run in Quebec, Imagine Picasso: the Immersive Experience is now open in Vancouver. Created by Annabelle Mauger and Julien Baron, the pair behind the wildly successful Imagine Van Gogh which ends its Vancouver run October 31st. In collaboration with art historian Androula Michael and award-winning French architect, Rudy Ricciotti, Imagine Picasso projects the works of the Modern Art Master’s works onto the walls, floor and a collection of architectural structures throughout the vast space at Canada Place.
An amazing 216 paintings, shown together for the first time, cover Picasso’s Blue and Rose periods, to through Cubism and his prolific later years. The vast number and span of the works allows visitors to realize there was more to Picasso’s portfolio than just his most-well known era. Using the Image Totale© technique, first developed by filmmaker and photographer Albert Plécy in 1977, Mauger and Baron have designed the exhibition to immerse the viewer within the paintings, allowing visitors to explore the fine details and fully experience the power of Picasso’s work.
If you’re like me and know the Picasso, the brand, better than his works, this is a unique opportunity to learn about the life of this Master of Modern Art. After showing your vaccine passport & tickets to enter the exhibition, guests flow through a series of panels elaborating on the artists’ life, muses, and creative periods. From the antechamber, the grand exhibition hall mesmerizes audiences as viewers and the artworks flow throughout the room over a 30+ minute cycle. The visitors become part of the exhibition as they are silhouetted by the projections immersing them within the artworks, each step creating an ever evolving visual for other viewers.
Imagine Picasso is in Vancouver only until January 8, 2022 (closed December 25th & January 1st) and it’s certain to sell out, you won’t want to miss out so get your tickets early. They’ll make a great holiday treat for family and friends!
