Following on the heals of Gruff!, playing until March 20th, Carousel Theatre for Young People (CTYP) has announced the next spring show of its season. The west coast premiere production of the circus-themed Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls, comes to the Waterfront Theatre on Granville Island from March 31 to April 23.
A heartwarming play about gender identity, written by Dave Deveau and directed by Jennica Grienke, CTYP’s new Co-Artistic & Managing Directors, Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls is their first piece of artistic programming as part of the organization’s commitment to telling inclusive stories with diverse themes for young audiences.
The Co-Artistic & Managing Directors say “We couldn’t be more excited to bring this timely story to children and families as our first production together. We’re confident it will make your hearts grow a couple of sizes.”
Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls is a joyful tale told from the vivid imagination of a 9-year-old who is assigned female at birth and named Fiona as he comes out as a boy called Fin. Through circus acts and mermaids, we move through his playful experiences and memories as his family begins to understand Fin’s gender identity. From there, we witness Fin embracing his true self for the very first time.
Leading the cast, in the role of Fin is Vancouver non-binary drag icon Rae Takei aka Rose Butch (CBC’s Canada’s A Drag).
Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls runs 65 minutes and is recommended for youth aged 7-12. The production runs March 31 – April 23, 2022 at Waterfront Theatre, Granville Island. The performance Saturday April 9th at 3pm will feature ASL interpretation.
