The Oscars alway bring out Hollywood’s finest and encourage viewing parties around the globe as the public aim to get a glimpse of the stars and see who takes home the Golden Statue. This year’s telecast took place March 2nd from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, a week later than their usual end of February spot so as not to conflict with the Sochi Olympics. Hosted, brilliantly by a tuxedoed Ellen DeGeneres, who kept the 3.5 hour telecast a witty and entertaining affair, taking #selfies (pictured above) throughout the show and even ordering pizza for the audience.
Performances during the telecast included the 4 Original Song nominees: U2 – Ordinary Love from Mandela: A Long Walk To Freedom, Karen O – The Moon Song from Her, Idina Menzel – Let It Go from Frozen and Pharell Williams – Happy from Despicable Me 2. As well, Pink paid tribute to the Wizard Of Oz on the 75th Anniversary of its release and Bette Midler sang “Wind Beneath My Wings” as part of the In Memoriam segment.
Live tweeting, photos and videos on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and more, augmented the telecast, allowing everyone to take part in the event. This year Ellen and Channing Tatum helped to choose the winners of a student college competition in which entrants submitted YouTube videos of why they should be part of Team Oscar. The six student winners making up Team Oscar; Zaineb Abdul-Nabi, Tayo Amos, Jean-Paul Isaacs, Nathan Flanagan-Frankl, Bryson Kemp and Mackenna Millet, won the chance to take the stage and deliver Oscar statuettes to the presenters.
Going into the evening Gravity and American Hustle lead the nominations with 10 each, closely followed by 12 Years A Slave with 9 nods. Gravity came away from night as the big winner with 7 Oscars overall.
