The Polaris Music Prize has launched a new project, the Polaris Cover Sessions. The Cover Sessions project invites past Polaris Short List nominees to visit Revolution Recording Studios and record a cover song by another past Polaris Short List nominee. AUX TV is filming each recording session to create a video to debut on the AUX TV YouTube channel.
Polaris will also be pressing each session into a seven-inch vinyl single to be releases for Record Store Day in spring 2015. Sarah Harmer, Whitehorse and Great Lake Swimmers are the first three artists announced to participate in the Polaris Cover Sessions.
Sarah Harmer will cover Caribou’s “Odessa” from the band’s 2010 Short-Listed album Swim, Whitehorse will cover The New Pornographers’ “Bones Of An Idol” from the band’s 2006 Short-Listed album Twin Cinema and Great Lake Swimmers will cover Sarah Harmer’s “I’m A Mountain” from her 2006 Short-Listed album of the same name.
The video for Harmer’s Caribou cover debuted, August 19, then AUX TV will air the next two videos on August 26 and September 2. Steve Jordan, Polaris Founder and Executive Director, hopes this is the start of many new and intriguing musical partnerships.
