The recent deaths of George Floyd and others, at the hands of police, have spurred on protests, marches and riots across the globe. The protests and support for the Black Lives Matter movement has moved many people to seek to learn more about racism, diversity and black history.
With the rising interest on these subjects, reading lists are causing many titles to sell out. Many of these lists are also American based, leaving out some great Canadian black literature, so our friends at Russell Books have put together a list of currently available titles, both non-fiction and fiction, that will help to carry on the conversation:
Non-fiction:
David Chariandy – I’ve Been Meaning to Tell You: A Letter to My Daughter
Franz Fanon – Black Skin, White Masks
James Baldwin – I Am Not Your Negro
Fiction:
Esi Edugyan – Washington Black
Lawrence Hill – Any Known Blood
Lawrence Hill – The Book of Negroes
Alex Haley – Roots: The Saga of an American Family
Science Fiction:
Octavia Butler – Fledgling
Children’s Chapter Books:
Jacqueline Woodson – Brown Girl Dreaming
