Tucked into a shopping complex in Surrey, the recently opened West Village Cafe is an urban oasis in a suburban sea of chain store conformity. Even as you enter the bright, contemporary, cafe you are aware that you’re in for something good.
Arriving on a Sunday morning, West Village Cafe was bustling and alive with groups of friends and families socializing, studying and sipping a great smoothie, or coffee while digging into their brunch or lunch dishes. Owners Paul and Jas, and their staff greet guests with friendly and fast service, creating a comfortable, welcoming room. Even though almost everything is housemade the small kitchen turns out food in a rapid pace, comparable to the fast food restaurant. Paul, Jas and Chef Tim Cuff have created a menu which offers a diverse selection of Breakfast/Brunch, Salads, Soups, Sandwiches, and their speciality Rice Bowls, along with Grab-n-Go baked goods and drinks. Ingredients have been carefully selected from local sources and the freshness is reflected in the taste.
My meal of the Turmeric, Cous Cous & Grapefruit Salad, with one of best classic Grilled Cheese Sandwiches was comforting and fresh. The AntiOxidant Smoothie and Chocolate & Peanut Butter Energy Seed Bar were a tasty, healthy combo to take on the road back to Vancouver. West Village Cafe may be out in Surrey, (we wish it there was one near our Yaletown neighbourhood) it’s definitely now on our list of places to visit on a day out and a place to meet with friends in the area.
West Village Cafe is located at #160 – 5620 152nd Street, Surrey BC Visit westvillagecafe.ca to check out the menu and more information then make a visit in person.
This week we were privileged to experience a preview of Morocco West‘s Dine Out Festival Vancouver menu. With the $28 set menu Chef Nour presented a cross section of the tastes Morocco West is known for, rich in flavours and beautifully presented as always.
Starters included a Morocco West Trio or hummus, zaalouk and lentil salad with house-made bread (vegetarian – V) or Wild Salmon Cake with pineapple salsa, pomegranate vinaigrette and balsamic reduction (gluten free – GF). The trio highlights the great tastes expected from Morocco West, especially one of the best Hummus in town. The crispy salmon cakes were complemented by the freshness of the pineapple salsa
There is three very different but amazingly flavourful main course options;
Ras-el-hanout Braised Lamb Shank with tomato rice stuffed roasted pepper, edamame puree and sauce chasseur (GF); a fall-off-the-bone shank that perfectly warms up a winter day.
Roasted Chermoula Chicken with saffron couscous, red wine braised cabbage, carrots, squash and raisin jus, is a dish brimming over with flavours, all of which work together to satisfy your palate.
Finally, Moroccan Cauli-Taktouka, a cauliflower, tomatoes, sweet peppers, chickpeas, olives and herbed-gnocchi (V), as a non-vegetarian this rich and hearty stew-like dish is more than satisfying, flavourful and filling.
Desserts were a choice of Sweet Rice Bastilla, cinnamon, raisins, almonds, rosewater creme anglais (V) or Persimmon Crumble with housemade ice cream & mulled wine syrup (V). Again, two very different dishes; the Bastilla was everything expected from a middle eastern dessert, the warmth of honey and the fragrance of the rose water stimulates all the senses. The Crumble caps a meal with fresh, warm and cool sensations all at once.

A disused storage space underneath the famed Commodore Ballroom has been transformed into one of Granville Street’s newer and unique dining venues, The Bottleneck. Nearly hidden between retail shops and the Commodore’s doors, entering The Bottleneck the brick and wood interior create a warm and inviting room, as welcoming for a business lunch as for after work cocktails. The Bottleneck kitchen has created a great quick lunch menu including sandwiches, burgers, wraps and salads. The evening menu features light bar snacks like Crispy Chick Peas and Chorizo Meatballs or heartier Spring Salmon or Flat Iron Steak. The bar turns out some great classic cocktails and beers but their forte is an amazing Caesar that’s a meal to itself. Located at 870 Granville Street, The Bottleneck is open from 11:30-6pm weekdays for lunch, and Wednesday through Saturday evenings from 6pm-2am with live music and events including Wednesday night Trivia. The space is also available for private hire for parties and special events. Find out more about The Bottleneck online or on Twitter @BottleneckVan and Facebook
