Throughout the pandemic, The Cultch adapted to the times and continued to bring us its programming to audiences with the use of digital streaming. Now, it has announced RE/PLAY, a new platform to showcase their ongoing digital programming. With four unique shows programmed between February and May 2022, The Cultch reaffirms that digital programming is here to stay and will continue to be a priority alongside their in-person offerings.
The Cultch has seen the benefits of presenting work on a digital platform, including providing even more accessible options for audiences, minimizing environmental impact, and allowing for new forms of performance. RE/PLAY is the place to experience edgy and eclectic work from The Cultch and participating theatres across Canada and around the world.
The inaugural season of RE/PLAY begins with four boundary-breaking shows. First, from world-renowned Belgian theatre company Ontroerend Goed, comes TM, a live interactive one-to-one experience about conspiracy theories and populist ideology produced in partnership with Richard Jordan Productions and Chicago Shakespeare Theater. Following this, the frank theatre’s Be-Longing—a pre-filmed production created in the depths of 2020, which explores feelings of exile, queerness, mourning and migration—will be presented on the platform.
And then, in April, RE/PLAY will feature the digital presentation of Neworld Theatre’s bilingual (Spanish and English) Clean/Espejos, by Governor General Award-winning playwright Christine Quintana with translation and adaptation by Paula Zelaya Cervantes. This presentation will be created specifically for RE/PLAY by The Cultch’s Video Director, Cameron Anderson, during the run of the March 2022 in-person show. Wrapping up the season, The Cultch dives into the urgent conversation about the climate crisis with UK theatre company Complicité’s Can I Live?.
The RE/PLAY online schedule is:
TM from Ontroerend Goed (Belgium)
February 2-13, 2022 – Interactive Livestream
Be-Longing from the frank theatre (Vancouver)
