This year, Vancouver’s Castle In The City, The Fairmont Hotel Vancouver turns 75 and the grande dame is getting a $12million dollar lobby renovation to celebrate. The heritage designated hotel will be revived with a new aura of luxury when the upgrades are completed later this year. To coincide with the renovations and anniversary, the hotel is drawing your attention to a storied part of its history, The Roof.
When the property opened in 1939, The Roof became a national icon, renowned for its dinner and dancing, and put Dal Richards on the music map. The now legendary Dal Richards and his 11-piece big band got their foot in the door on May 1, 1940 for a six-week gig, that lasted for the next 25 years. The Roof also served as a studio for CBC Radio, airing a weekly show from under the iconic green copper roof for many years.
Later this month, the room returns in the form of a 15th floor pop-up restaurant, The Roof, highlights the panoramic views over the city, coast and mountains. Planned to remain open until the autumn, guests can enjoy the spectacular views for themselves during over breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner in the restaurant. The sunken bar features a ‘Mad Men’ style cocktail list and atmosphere. Open from 11:30am to midnight daily, the bar also has live entertainment Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings.
Newly appointed general manager, Michael Pye, states “Vancouverites have had a love affair with the hotel since it opened and it’s surprising how often we receive stories about the memories guests have of the property and our staff. The temporary opening of The Roof will introduce a new generation to the venue and, we hope, new memories to share.”
