This year, like many recent years at the movie box office is filled with sequels and remakes as movie studios stick to what works. In fact, The LEGO Movie is the only unique film in the Top 10, the remainder are parts of a franchise or remake/reboot of a pre-existing work. With the budgets for movies growing in leaps and bounds every year, it’s little wonder that studio heads seem reluctant to take too many risks with their budgets. The recent controversy surrounding Sony Pictures and “The Interview” certainly aren’t going to make things easier on producers trying to get smaller (and edgier) movies made.
