Lisa Hannigan – Media Club – October 6, 2011
Irish songstress graced the Media Club in Vancouver with her one of a kind vocals. In support of her latest album ‘Passengers’, Hannigan shows she’s truly stepped out from the shadows of early mentor Damian Rice. The 75min set also included songs from her previous releases plus a brilliant cover of Depeche Mode’s ‘Personal Jesus’.
Beautiful vocals blend with unique, traditional folk instruments to cast a spell over the audience. In a small room, like the Media Club, it’s especially for the audience in the back of the room to not feel involved in the show and chit chat but there was nary a peep from anywhere in the room whist she was singing.
Between songs her witty, self-depricating banter showed her personality and enraptured anyone not already on side. Even the shouts of “we love you” were met and incorporated into her chat, with wit and wide-eyed innocence. It almost seems as though Ms Hannigan has a hard time believing that she has fans willing to come watch her show. Although this was a small venue it perfectly suited her style and sound, creating an intimate personal show versus a large format which would probably swallow up her and her backing musicians.
While the future looks bright for Hannigan, let’s hope she doesn’t get too big and stop playing in these small venues.
