With a name like The Fish Shack and a slogan “Hook It & Cook It”, evoking a dockside fish monger, you’d better have a great seafood menu to live up to the name, this latest entry from The Glowbal Group indeed lives up to it.
One of the first things that greets guests as they walk in the door it the huge ‘fresh’ wall listing all the fresh catch of the day. A fresh sheet with your menu lists what’s currently available. Oysters from the local West Coast waters abound along with a few from the Atlantic shores, visit before 5pm for Buck-A-Shuck Oysters and try them all. Fish are listed along with their origins so you can make an informed decision on your choices.
On a recent visit we started with Popcorn Shrimp, a light and crispy batter enveloping each tasty bite, 6 each of the fresh Kusshi and Caraquet oysters on the half shell, served on ice with a lemon and cocktail sauces.
Main course brought a us salmon fish & chips and a mussels and clam steamer pop. The salmon was battered lightly so the taste of the fresh salmon wasn’t masked, the chips reminded me of a proper British chip shop. The steaming pot of shellfish were in a Thai brew of coconut, thai basil and lemongrass, creating a beautifully fragrant and flavourful broth.
A great selection of cocktails, like the Vancouver Island Iced Tea or the Bull Dog, add to the meal. To round off the experience desserts like the Sticky Toffee Pudding provide a sweet finish.
The casual, relaxed atmosphere lends itself to being social, we found we ended up chatting with the ladies at the next table as we all compared notes on cocktails and entrees for our next visits. There will definitely be a next visit, possibly during Dine Out Vancouver this month, for The Fish Shack’s $18 Dine Out Menu
