“nouveau Canadian Bistro” is how the team behind The Flying Pig describe their Yaletown eatery. The bustling restaurant is an assortment of seating arrangements, banquets for two, long tables for groups and high seats around the bar and along the street side windows add variety and make for a convivial atmosphere as groups of people gather to share meals.
A menu made up of classic, simple small plates, entrees and sides welcome diners making it easy to ‘share’ a meal. Funnily the menu includes little pork, perhaps it did fly off? House cured meats, cheeses and olives make up a nice starter charcuterie plate; Three Pea Soup with Ham; fresh, light salads and a local wild salmon sampler plate make up some of the appetizers. Slow Braised Short Ribs, Halibut Cheeks, Striploin, roast Chicken, Veal Piccata and BBQ Salmon fill the entree menu, with crispy brussels sprouts, cauliflower au gratin, Lobster & Prawn Risotto and Shortrib Jumbo Macaroni as side dishes.
On this visit my friend and I tried a selection of items; starting with the shared Charcuterie accompanied by a nice large glass of Sangria. The Three Pea Soup was rich and filled with chunks of ham, my companion preferred the brussel sprouts to be crispier but they were done to my liking, the Cauliflower gratin was well done and the lobster & prawn risotto has surprisingly large chunks of lobster and lots of prawns. My friend’s striploin was in a nice peppercorn sauce and piled high with matchstick potatoes. (which were a little on the salty side). Overall The Flying Pig makes for a
casual, comfortable meal on a nice evening out.
