The Hold Steady – Rogers Arena – October 21, 2011
Critically acclaimed indie-rockers recently came through Vancouver while opening for Death Cab For Cutie. Formed in 2004, the New York quintet bring classic indie-rock to the stage and have become favourites of critics and other musicians alike.
Rich, dense lyrics are set against music that feels instantly familiar and new at the same time. Lead singer Craig Finn’s vocal style, reminiscent of 90’s post-grunge era rock, is in contrast to his simple dress style, looking a bit like a high-school teacher, on stage.
After five albums, The Hold Steady have a simple, easy comaradarie onstage eventhough they recently had a change of membership as long time member Franz Nicolay left and Steve Selvedge joined just before the recording of the filth album leaving them little time to gel, but they have indeed gelled. Opening acts can be debateable and often missable, I’m certainly glad I made the effort to come catch part of their set. Although just a short opening set, The Hold Steady will hopefully be around again soon with a longer headlinging show.
