The recently opened Victoria Public Market at The Hudson represents the long dream of the Victoria Downtown Public Market Society. With a goal of a year-round public market the VDPMS finally found the perfect location with the help of Townline Ventures, the redevelopers of the historic Hudson’s Bay Company store. The Hudson has been redeveloped into condos on the upper floors and the main floor is the new permanent home of the Victoria Public Market.
The large open hall, is lined with long-term vendors; Salt Spring Island Cheese, Silk Road Tea, La Cocina de Mama Oli, Sutra, Roast, Island Spice Trade, Victoria Pie Co, Damn Fine Cake Co, Olive the Senses, Cowichan Bay Seafood and Il Dolce Gelato. Wednesdays come alive as the Farmer’s Market fills the centre court with fresh, local fare.
The Market is also home to The Community Kitchen, supported by VanCity’s EnviroFund, the kitchen is the place for the vendors to do public demonstrations or visiting chefs to put on a cooking class. The Community Kitchen is also available for rentals with a sliding pay scale that aims to support local, food-related non-profits, social enterprises, and community initiatives.
With a few more vendors yet to come to fill all the locations, a greengrocer, butcher and florist are coming soon, the vibrant Victoria Public Market has brought new life to this end of downtown Victoria.
The Victoria Public Market at The Hudson is open Tuesday – Saturday 0930-1830, Sunday 0930-1700.
