Today, is Commodore Ballroom Day! To celebrate its 90th anniversary, Mayor of the City of Vancouver, Kennedy Stewart, has made the official proclamation that December 3, 2020 is Commodore Ballroom Day, acknowledging the cultural legacy and historic significance of the legendary downtown Vancouver ballroom. The proclamation kicked off a series of celebrations for the venue’s anniversary.
Since opening its doors in 1930, the Commodore Ballroom has grown to become the city’s best-known and most beloved live music venue. Based on the grand British Ballrooms of the age, the Commodore is still an excellent example of Art Deco style, elegant décor, and arguably the best dancefloor in town.
The Commodore has featured an astonishing list of performers over the last nine decades. Providing musical memories for generations, the Commodore Ballroom has hosted a stellar line-up of artists over the years, performers have included Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller Orchestra, Sammy Davis Jr, Dal Richards, David Bowie, Tina Turner, The Clash, U2, Nirvana, Coldplay, Lady Gaga, Snoop Dogg, The Weeknd, and many more. If you are a regular, like me, you probably have your own special spot to enjoy the live sounds on stage. What are your favourite memories of a show at the Commodore Ballroom?
Over the years, the Commodore Ballroom has also won countless accolades, not just from its adoring fans, Billboard Magazine has named one of the Top 10 Most Influential Clubs in North America and the Most Influential Club in Canada.
To help celebrate the 90th Anniversary, fans of the Commodore Ballroom can participate in a host of events (guided by current public health restrictions), to add another memory of the fabled landmark.
