While fast food is plentiful in the Granville Entertainment District, finding something satisfying and healthy is a little less easy. The recently opened Hungry Guys Kitchen solves that dilemma.
The menu of Burritos, Salads and Bowls sounds simple but the combinations of flavours are endless. We’ve already visited a few times since they opened, in December, and been able to find plenty of variety by mixing different combinations in the burritos and bowls. Each visit finds the comfortably stylish eatery a little busier as more people discover Hungry Guys.
Each Burrito, Bowl (starting at $8.89) and Salad ($6.50+) has a base selection of ingredients; brown/white rice, fresh greens, beans, chicken, tofu, steak or pork carnitas, topped with salsas, corn, sour cream. Change up your menu by adding any of the other fresh vegetables and ingredients.
The rustic decor elevates the Hungry Guys Kitchen above other quick food places. Cool music, free wi-fi and conveniently located power outlets make it a handy place to grab and bite and do some work too.
Today and Saturday, local and international skateboarders are gathering at Hastings Park for the second Canadian edition of the Van Doren Invitational skateboarding event at Hastings Bowl.
Presented by global footwear brand Vans, the free event brings fans and families to watch the international skate jam. Last year a crowd of about 3000 came out to watch the action. (video)
Today head to the park at 2pm to catch the 32 qualifiers compete for their chance to advance to Saturday’s Final Rounds. If you can’t make it in person on Saturday, the proceedings will be webcast live starting at 2pm for the Semi-Finals. Follow at 4pm by the finals, a Best Trick competition at 4:40 then awards at 5pm.

I was taken out to lunch recently to Mandalay Lounge and Steakhouse in Steveston. I rarely venture out to the quaint riverside village in Richmond but I’m glad we did, tucked in behind some other restaurants and shops Mandalay Lounge has a great location right on the riverside boardwalk. Boats come and go from the nearby docks, providing a backdrop to a pleasant atmosphere. A varied menu meant there was something for everyone at lunch. As expected from a venue on the waterfront, seafood is plentiful throughout the menu; Moo Shu Crab Cakes, Spicy Tuna Sashimi, Pacific Seafood Chowder and Mandalay Prawns are amongst the starters. Follow them up with a main course of; Steak & Frites, Wild Mushroom Ravioli, Certified Angus Beef Prime Rib Burger, Chicken Mushroom Tagliatelle or Wild Salmon. A nice touch for the busy lunch crowd are the Mandalay Express Lunch Rice & Noodle Bowls, a selection of 6 Asian inspired bowls prepared quickly and easily for your lunch break. Two of my friends ordered the Thai Red Curry Seafood bowls, nicely seasoned and full of seafood. My other friend has the Wild Salmon, a nicely cooked fillet served with rice and vegetables. My Chicken Mushroom Tagliatelle was rich and full of chicken and meaty mushrooms in a nicely seasoned sauce. Add a glass of wine from the nicely choosen wine list and you’ve got a great afternoon on the shore.
Mandalay Lounge & Steakhouse is located at 140 – 3900 Bayview Street, Steveston, Richmond, BC (behind Hog Shack Restaurant) Phone (604) 628-2500 for information and reservations
