Pss Pss Grabs Attention at The Cultch

For theatre without dialogue, Compagnia Baccalà’s Pss Pss certainly creates a lot of buzz, on stage at The Cultch York Theatre.

Him and Her

The award winning show stars Camilla Pessi and Simone Fassari, her and him, as they take the audience on an adventure in physical-comedy.  The two performers formed Compagnia Baccalà combining careers in circus and cabaret, which both shine through in Pss Pss.  Their mostly silent performance echos comedy greats like Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin and even Lucille Ball, their clown-like faces able to express so much with just a raised eyebrow, or curl of the lips.  Where their facial expressions bring laughter, their physical acrobatics and gymnastics skills bring awe.

Like a circus show, Pss Pss is a series of set pieces combining all of their skills into a hilarious and breathtaking hour long performance.  While their acrobatics are awe-inspiring the moments that are perhaps the most risky are incorporating the audience.

As with any audience interaction the performer hopes their instincts are sharp and they choose an able and game player. On opening night the audience members really got into the spirit of the show and the man they singled out to bring onstage perfectly fit the bill, incorporating into their balancing act with ease.  Even though not part of the direct interaction, hearing the large number of children in the audience vocalize their wonder and amazement add an extra bit of joy to the experience.

Compagnia Baccalà’s Pss Pss is an hour of theatre that is sure to put a smile on your face, and a thrill in your heart.

The York Theatre plays host to Pss Pss until March 4, 2018. Visit thecultch.com for tickets and showtimes.

Take a trip to “Ithaka” on stage

Ithaca_2016-04-24 23.55.50Opening in one week at the Havana Theatre, Ithaka, is a new play by Andrea Stolowitz, directed by Jessica Anne Nelson. Co-produced by dream of passion productions and Excavation Theatre, the Canadian Premiere performance runs, May 3-7 and 10-14, 2016 at the intimate Commercial Drive stage.

Ithaka is about a Marine Captain, Elaine Edwards, who has just returned from her latest tour in Afghanistan but this time things are different – home doesn’t feel right and nothing makes sense. After a blow up fight with her husband propels her to skip town, she undertakes an Odyssean journey through the American landscape battling her monsters, trying to find her way home.

Stefania Indelicato, artistic director of dream of passion productions, also a performer in Ithaka, found the work and brought it to the stage under the direction of Jessica Anne Nelson of Excavation Theatre. The duo previously collaborated on 2014’s After, also at the Havana Theatre.

In response to the plays subject matter, a marine dealing with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), the producers have partnered with Wounded Warriors Canada (WWC), a non-profit organization that supports Canada’s ill and injured Canadian Armed Forces members, Veterans, and their families, through a wide range of national programs and services.  Corporal David Macdonald, WWC’s National Partnerships Director says, “Having served in Afghanistan with the Canadian Infantry, this portrayal of a US Marine coming home from war strikes an all too familiar tone with me. Andrea Stolowitz captures it completely with an ending that will leave the audiences feeling what it means to be a veteran now home from war.”

To experience the powerful story yourself, get Ithaka tickets online now.
The Havana Theatre is located at 1212 Commercial Drive.
Performances are May 3-7 & 10-14, 2016 nightly at 8:00pm nightly with a 2pm matinee on May 7th.

Tasting Plates Commercial Drive – recap

Last night, a gang of hungry foodies and their friends descended on The Drive for Tasting Plates – Commercial Drive. Checking in at Federico’s Supper Club, tasting platers began their annual exploration of East Vancouver.  Over the course of the night, the Italian legacy of the neighbourhood shone through with many plate reflecting a Mediterranean heritage
Lesismore_TastingPlates_2015-08-12, 18 56 46Starting the night on a lively note as special musical guest, Lesismore, performed their while we dined at Federico’s.

TastingPlates_2015-08-12, 19 05 43The Federico’s Supper Club tasting plate included 4 great bites; Arancino (a rich Arborio rice ball with saffron, Pecorino Romano and truffle oil), Bruschetta al Pesto di Piselli e Menta (grilled bread with a fresh topping of crushed peas with mint, olive oil and ricotta salata), Involtina di Prosciutoo e Burrata (Prusciutto wrapped Burrate with basil and fried capers) and a sweet Fico con Ricotta Fresca (honey roasted fig, with  ricotta and balsamic reduction). A $5 wine pair for each plate was also offered.

TastingPlates_2015-08-12, 19 33 40Next we had a healthy, palate cleansing trio of Tasting Cups from Bonvita Health.  Their juice and smoothie options were “The Root Down” (Orange, Beet, Carrot and Ginger juice), “Green Revival” (Cucumber, Kale, Celery, Cilantro, Dandelion, Apple and Turmeric juice) and “Bonvita Classic” (Banana, Cacao, Date and Almond Milk smoothie)

TastingPlates_2015-08-12, 20 02 49Over on Clark Drive, we found the Via Tevere Neapolitan Experss truck parked outside Strange Fellows Brewery.  Hot Neapolitan Saltimbocca Sandwiches fresh from the truck’s stone oven; the options were Proscuitto and Arugula or a Caprese sandwich.  Both were hot and melty contrasting with fresh greens and mayo.

Taking a seat inside Strange Fellows Brewery to eat the sandwiches they were perfectly paired with the brewery’s tasting cups of Talisman Pale Ale (a pale ale with a hint of peach) and Jogleur Wit (a citrus Belgian Wheat ale).

TastingPlates_2015-08-13, 00 04 45Back up to The Drive, stepping into Fratelli Bakery was like a visit to Italy as the bakers piled a selection of their sweet Italian treats into a tasting box.  Cream and Cheese filled Canollis, Nutella Macarons, Amaretti and, Espresso Cookies, Custard Filled Cream Puffs all gave us a taste of the old world.

TastingPlates_2015-08-12, 20 43 14The final stop at Prado Cafe helped wash everything down with a Italian Soda, or an alternate choice of Cold Brew Coffee or Iced Tea. The drink was served alongside a rich and moist slice of “Jackie’s Birthday Cake”.

If you missed your chance to experience the flavour-filled visit to Commercial Drive, don’t fret Tasting Plates is making another visit to a neighbourhood near you.  August 26th, Tasting Plates Chinatown takes a tour through one of our oldest neighbourhoods to visit some of our newest restaurants.

La Mezcaleria Cocktails

Friday afternoon, guests at the #OaxacanTasting at La Mezcaleria were treating to some very refreshing and tasty cocktails created by Kelly Ann Woods.

Photo 2014-05-30, 11 02 46Put on in conjunction with the Tequila Expo, the afternoon started with a welcome cocktail, “Spiked Agua Fresca” – Watermelon Thai Basil con piquete (or without).  Garnished with a bright cube of watermelon, it was a great summer splash on a sunny day.

Photo 2014-05-30, 11 40 58As the food preparation and associated aromas filled the air, along came a palate warmer, “Spring in San Pancho” – Silver Tequila, housemade berry syrup, jamaica, berries and soda. Even a virgin version was a refreshing, fizzy pick-me-up.

When the meal was ready, Chef Susana Trilling’s Enchiladas Oaxaqueño were served with a “Tamarindo Margarita” – Tamarind infused Tequila, lemon, agave, tajine and orange flavours blended into a light and clean tasting Margarita. The flavours softened the usual hard bite of the tequila.

As the spot in the city for Mescal, a visit to La Mezcaleria wouldn’t be complete without sampling some of the Mexican spirit as well.

Kindly mixologist Kelly Ann Woods has shared her recipe for the ” Tamarindo Margarita” so you can enjoy one with your Enchiladas Oaxaqueño, after spending the day making Mole and the Enchiladas you’ll need it.
