On Sunday night, the 3rd Canadian Screen Awards were presented at the Four Seasons for the Performing Arts in Toronto. The awards gala telecast was hosted by Canadian comedy legend Andrea Martin.
Since 2013 the Canadian Academy of Film and Television has merged the awards formerly presented in the individual Gemini and Genie Awards and added Digital Media to be recognized in the newly formed Canadian Screen Awards. With nearly 100 awards to be presented, the last week has seen a number of awards presented in a series of galas during Canadian Screen Week in Toronto culminating in the 2 hour CBC telecast.
The movie Mommy lead the film division with 13 nominations and Orphan Black lead television also with 13 nods.
At the end of the night, Mommy walked away with 9 “Screenies” from the week’s galas including Best Picture and Orphan Black took away 10. The film Pompeii was also a big winner with 5 awards.
