Sunday night, a sure sign of fall, the 67th Primetime Emmy Awards, took place in Hollywood. Hosted by SNL and Brooklyn Nine-Nine star Andy Samberg from the Microsoft Theatre in downtown Los Angeles, the awards paid tribute to the 2014-15 television season and serves as a kick off to the new season of shows starting this week.
As usual HBO lead the nominations, with 40, a big lead over ABC with 14. Leading the program nominations, the Limited Series (formerly called miniseries) shone brightly with American Horror Story: Freak Show (8), Olive Kittridge (7), and American Crime (6) at the top of the table. Not to be left out, perennial favourites, Game Of Thrones (7), Mad Men (6) and Veep (6) stood out too. At the end of the night HBO’s Olive Kitteridge lead the way with 6 wins followed by Game of Thrones and Veep with 4 each.
Highlights of the acting categories included Julia Louis-Dreyfuss winning her 4th consecutive Emmy for Veep. Jon Hamm winning his first Emmy after 16 nominations. Viola Davis becoming the first black actress to win Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama. Game Of Thrones wins, combined with its wins in last week’s Creative Arts Emmys means it set the record for most Emmy Awards (12) in a single year.
Besides the usual In Memoriam segment there was also a segment showcasing the shows that ended this season; Glee, Breaking Bad, True Blood, Sons of Anarchy, Nurse Jackie, Mad Men, Parks & Recreation, Late Night With David Letterman, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, The Colbert Report, and many more.
