The Cultch kicks off its 2025/2026 season with WOLF, a new show from the Australian contemporary circus company Circa. Having co-presented two previous works by Circa with DanceHouse, at Vancouver Playhouse, The Cultch brings the company to its own York Theatre for the first time, running until October 18.
Another stunning example of the breathtaking circus performance Circa is known for, WOLF is a delightfully energetic, thrilling wild romp across the stage. Whether it’s one performer or ten, the company fills the stage with its vibrant energy. From a single player upon the trapeze to the entire “wolf pack” huddled together to attack their next action, the ensemble keep all eyes fixed squarely upon the stage, not wanting to miss a single movement. Set against an eclectic rhythmic techno soundtrack, the cast bursts forth with amazing energy, leaping, flipping, twisting and turning themselves and their colleagues around the floor. In some pieces of the performance there is a simple quiet power just under the surface of their movements, then like a pack of hungry wolves built into a kinetic ball of energy they burst forth with astounding acts of feats of strength and agility. Then once the piece has satisfied their hunger for the powerful, the movements become playful and vibrant as young pups playing for laughs and giggles. Throughout the two acts, the company keeps the audience on the edge of their seats, both bursting into spontaneous applause or holding their breath in silence at the stunning act before them.
WOLF is created and directed by Yaron Lifschitz with the Circa ensemble, the company’s performers include Jon Bonaventura, Holly-Rose Boyer, Nathan Boyle, Chelsea Hall, Samuel Letch, Laya Mauelshagen, Oscar Morris, Daniel O’Brien, Luke Pearce, Joshua Strachan, and Christina Zauner. In the intimate setting of the smaller York Theatre the thrills feel even more bold, especially those rigged high over the stage on the aerial straps and Corde lisse as the audience collectively holds its breath.
