Vancouver Opera invites music lovers to 88 Years, 88 Keys: Celebrating the Music of Philip Glass, a free concert honouring the 88th birthday of one of the most iconic composers of our time.
Part of Vancouver Opera’s VOICES concert series, supported by TD, the concert will be held on Friday, January 31st at the Martha Lou Henley Rehearsal Hall.
“Philip Glass’s music has an unparalleled ability to evoke deep emotion and reflection, and we are thrilled to honour his extraordinary artistry through this special concert,” said Tom Wright, General Director of Vancouver Opera. “The VOICES series is our way of bringing transformative music to the community, and we are proud to make this accessible to everyone thanks to the support of TD.”
The evening features a piano recital by Vancouver Opera Associate Conductor and Chorus Director Leslie Dala, performing Phillip Glass’s Piano Etudes, Book 2 in its entirety. A distinguished conductor and pianist whose multifaceted career spans opera, symphonic music, choral, and contemporary works, Dala has earned international acclaim for his thoughtful interpretations and technical brilliance. At Vancouver Opera, he has conducted productions of Carmen and The Flying Dutchman, among others. February 8, 13, and 16, he conducts Vancouver Opera’s production of Flight, a vibrant counterbalance to Vancouver’s grey midwinter.
For 88 Years, 88 Keys, Dala will showcase Glass’s innovative minimalist style and ability to create deeply emotional musical landscapes through repetition and simplicity.
