Avenue Q : The Musical – The Centre in Vancouver – February 1, 2011
The touring production of the long running Broadway and Off-Broadway hit has made its way to Vancouver for 6 shows only. Opening tonight and running until Saturday February 5th (playing nightly plus matinee on Saturday) I highly recommend checking it out.
Set in a New York City where puppets and people live together in perfect harmony…ok, so at times not so harmoniously…in an apartment building on Avenue Q. The tenants cover all walks of life; humans Brian and his Japanese fiancée Christmas Eve, Kate Monster (a puppet), Roommate puppets Rod & Nicky, Trekkie Monster (a bit of a reclusive porn addict) and newcomer Princeton (a fresh-faced college graduate puppet). Watching over the tenants is Superintendent Gary Coleman, of Different Strokes child actor fame. This character was presumably intended to mock the plight of the child star but since his passing has become more of homage.
Hilarious music and lyrics along with some ‘full puppet nudity’ lift this musical about real-life situations into an extraordinary fun filled two hours. You’ll never look at puppets the same way again!
Although this opening night production had a couple of small technical glitches it’s still very worth seeing…try to catch this unique musical before it’s gone. Look for tickets from The Centre In Vancouver online.

Here comes Santa Claus! Here Comes Santa Claus! Right down Georgia Street…
Sunday December 5th is the Seventh Annual Rogers Santa Claus Parade in Vancouver.
Family fun pre-parade activities can be found at the Christmas Square in the Vancouver Art Gallery grounds from 1100 until parade time at 1300. Face Painting, Gingerbread Tent, Write a Letter Santa stations and performance are all part of the festivities.
After having fun at the Christmas Square get ready for the man in the big red suit as the parade begins at 1300. The Parade route begins at Georgia and Broughton Streets, running along Georgia to Howe and finally ending at Howe and Davie Streets.
Make sure to dress warmly as you’ll be standing for quite a while, bringing something warm to drink it always a good thing too. Stake out your prime viewing spot early as it will be crowded!
We’re not in Full House anymore!
Best known as Danny Tanner from Full House and the Host of America’s Funniest Home Videos, Bob Saget’s stand-by comedy is no where near the family friendly fare of his former tv shows. Bringing his rapid fire comedy to town as part of his Strange Days Tour, supporting his new A&E TV show of the same name, Mr Saget involved and entertained a full house at the Vogue Theatre. Unlike most entertainers he almost encouraged hecklers and right from the first moments, when he started having fun with and at the expense of audience members the stage was set for a raunchy, anything goes evening.
From the audience; Kirk has his sexuality questioned and mocked, Mole (who showed off his name tattooed on his wrist) had his mental state & competence mocked, Antoine had his Polish heritage mocked. Although not quite as misogynistic as his same named Entourage alter-ego, Bob made plenty of normally politically incorrect comments and profane one-liners about women being in power. It seemed no matter what the audience whipped at him, Bob was able to hit it out of the park with quick witted zingers. Throughout the two hour show, stories about his father were intertwined with tales from his TV shows and costars. Wrapping up the show with a 30 minute set of songs that were more ‘blue’ than blues but all the while hilarious, eliciting a rousing standing ovation from the audience.
Third night’s a charm!
Thursday night’s tweetup was hosted at The Corner Suite Bistro De Luxe (@thecornersuite) by @TheSassyFiles and @SoniaStirling
Welcomed with a glass of champagne by Steve, owner and bartender extraordinaire, we instantly felt at home. Great company and conversation flowed easily all night. Steve was a calm hub of activity behind the bar serving us drinks and knowledge about the beverages, food and life. It’s great to see a restaurateur with such an intimate knowledge and care of everything that’s coming into, out of and happening in his establishment. The Tweet up drink special was very tasty…and the appetizer Croque Mademoiselle that I had was a perfect bite. In fact, everything on the menu looked fresh, local and mouthwatering.
The Corner Suite is a lovely and inviting, open room with an elevated bar area perfectly made for socializing. I’m sure at lunch it’s a great spot to sit and chat with a bartender or people watch, over the tables, looking out to the street but at night the long bar is intimate and cozy while at the same time makes mingling easy. The patrons at the tables didn’t seem to be bothered by the rather large crowd of tweeps gathering at the bar and we didn’t feel like we were intruding on their quiet dining experience. It was another night meeting some terrific tweeps, I’m sorry I missed meeting some of them or if I missed a name or two: @donovanpee @maryinvancity @vancityamy @DennisPang @Bbodies4life @missvitamindee @brandanprice @BurrowsGirl @c_witty @_JustaBee @Miss_MayC @jessebowness @hotdealsdonovan @vancouverjock @jeremylim @Conner_G @CanadianKelli @kwalshphoto @VanCindy @Asana987
Hope to see everyone again soon at the next tweetup!
Another night, another tweet up!
This time it took us out of town…all the way across the Lions Gate Bridge to West Vancouver! Beachside Forno (@beachside_forno) is in the heart of the Ambleside neighbourhood, easily located on Marine Drive so my friend, Brian (@br_webb) and I decided to take Transit. This was our first visit but the restaurant is instantly warm & inviting and although it was dark we could tell that there would be a great view from the back patio, overlooking the water and Stanley Park beyond.
The Beachside crew has tasting bites of their great pizzas for the guests to sample…with ‘Forno’ in your name your pizzas better be good and these lived up to the name. Crispy, simple and very tasty! Skyy Vodka & Granville Island Brewery kindly donated some of their product so the minimal charge for drinks was donated to support Movember for Prostate Cancer awareness. I’d also ordered a ‘Beachside chicken burger’ which was very nicely topped with pesto, portobello mushrooms and provolone, accompanied by a very nice salad of mixed greens. All the food from the menu looked excellent.
Organizer Jennifer Kemshaw (@jkemshaw) did a great job of getting the word out to a variety of Tweeps and Facebookers to come down, get a taste of the Beachside Forno experience and meet each other. Besides meeting Jennifer for the first time, I got to meet @604homesguy @AliciaHollywood @rezg23 @HeadtotheNet @brandanprice and reconnect with @jessebowness @Lev_ivy again. We all look forward to catching up again at the next tweetup. Perhaps another at Beachside Forno?
Tonight Hot Deals Live and r.tl Regional Tasting Lounge hosted a very successful tweet-up.
What was expected to be about 15 people turned into nearly twice that many. For many of us it was our first experience at r.tl and they did an excellent job of introducing us to a sampling of their menu.
Warm marinated Olives, Roasted Beet Salad with goat cheese & arugula, Quinoa Salad, Prosciutto wrapped Dates were followed by grilled chicken skewers with jerk sauce and an earthy, rich Mushroom & Truffle Risotto finally mini Venison Burgers. Everything was hearty, healthy and tasty. A nice cocktail menu and wine list paired completed the solid menues.
Some great company with new and previously met tweeps made for a very nice evening. @HotDealsDonovan put together a great bunch; @gracecheung604 @IAMRUBY @the_bradford @hairbykatierose @NatashaCarpio @cwistal @Conner_G @fit_tobe_tied @VancityAmy @Lev_ivy @LindseyBlunt @AdrianEden @Raincitybikes @Nelliebobellie plus many others whom I’m sorry didn’t get to find out their twitter handles
