Friday Find – Hungry Guys

HungryGuysLogo

While fast food is plentiful in the Granville Entertainment District, finding something satisfying and healthy is a little less easy.  The recently opened Hungry Guys Kitchen solves that dilemma.

The menu of Burritos, Salads and Bowls sounds simple but the combinations of flavours are endless.   We’ve already visited a few times since they opened, in December, and been able to find plenty of variety by mixing different combinations in the burritos and bowls. Each visit finds the comfortably stylish eatery a little busier as more people discover Hungry Guys.

HungryGuysGreensEach Burrito, Bowl (starting at $8.89) and Salad ($6.50+) has a base selection of ingredients; brown/white rice, fresh greens,  beans, chicken, tofu, steak or pork carnitas, topped with salsas, corn, sour cream.  Change up your menu by adding any of the other fresh vegetables and ingredients.

HungryGuysThe rustic decor elevates the Hungry Guys Kitchen above other quick food places. Cool music, free wi-fi and conveniently located power outlets make it a handy place to grab and bite and do some work too.

Hungry Guys Kitchen is located at 988 Granville Street,  open from 11am – 10pm

Find The Bottleneck on Granville Street

The Bottleneck

A disused storage space underneath the famed Commodore Ballroom has been transformed into one of Granville Street’s newer and unique dining venues, The Bottleneck.  Nearly hidden between retail shops and the Commodore’s doors, entering The Bottleneck the brick and wood interior create a warm and inviting room, as welcoming for a business lunch as for after work cocktails.
The Bottleneck kitchen has created a great quick lunch menu including sandwiches, burgers, wraps and salads. The evening menu features light bar snacks like Crispy Chick Peas and Chorizo Meatballs or  heartier Spring Salmon or Flat Iron Steak. The bar turns out some great classic cocktails and beers but their forte is an amazing Caesar that’s a meal to itself. The Bottleneck Located at 870 Granville Street, The Bottleneck is open from 11:30-6pm weekdays for lunch, and Wednesday through Saturday evenings from 6pm-2am with live music and events including  Wednesday night Trivia.  The space is also available for private hire for parties and special events.

The Fish Shack

The Fish Shack  IMG_6426    With a name like The Fish Shack and a slogan “Hook It & Cook It”, evoking a dockside fish monger, you’d better have a great seafood menu to live up to the name, this latest entry from The Glowbal Group indeed lives up to it.
One of the first things that greets guests as they walk in the door it the huge ‘fresh’ wall listing all the fresh catch of the day. A fresh sheet with your menu lists what’s currently available. Oysters from the local West Coast waters abound along with a few from the Atlantic shores, visit before 5pm for Buck-A-Shuck Oysters andIMG_6422 try them all. Fish are listed along with their origins IMG_6427so you can make an informed decision on your choices.
On a recent visit we started with Popcorn Shrimp, a light and crispy batter enveloping each tasty bite, 6 each of the fresh Kusshi and Caraquet oysters on the half shell, served on ice with a lemon and cocktail sauces.
Main course brought a us salmon fish & chips and a mussels and clam steamer pop. The salmon was battered lightly so the IMG_6428taste of the fresh salmon wasn’t masked, the chips reminded me of a proper British chip shop. The steaming pot of shellfish were in a Thai brew of coconut, thai basil and lemongrass, creating a IMG_6429beautifully fragrant and flavourful broth.
A great selection of cocktails, like the Vancouver Island Iced Tea or the Bull Dog, add to the meal. To round off the experience desserts like the Sticky Toffee Pudding provide a sweet finish.
The casual, relaxed atmosphere lends itself to being social, we found we ended up chatting with the ladies at the next table as we all compared notes on cocktails and entrees for our next visits. There will definitely be a next visit, possibly during Dine Out Vancouver this month, for The Fish Shack’s $18 Dine Out MenuIMG_6432
