Gigs: The amazingly energetic Arctic Monkeys rock the Vogue Theatre for two shows this week, December 1 and December 2 at 7.

Picks of the Week – Oct 23, 2013

Dr Sun Yat-Sen Garden - Judge DeeThe end of October is upon us and that means a time for Tricks and Treats, Costumes and Parties. Although Halloween isn’t for a few more days, this weekend will host most of the festivities.

Rock: It’s not too late to grab a ticket and catch rocker Chris Cornell at The Orpheum Theatre at 7:30pm

Haunts: From October 24 – 31, take a step into the history and haunts of Judge Dee, China’s Sherlock Holmes. The Garden is transformed into a haunted house as actors recreate the fabled cases of Judge Dee.

Laugh: Comedy icon John Cleese begins a 5 night stand at Vancouver’s Vogue Theatre from Oct 24th – 29th at 8pm

Gig: See what all the buzz is about as Haim takes the stage at Commodore Ballroom on Thursday night.

Spooks: Get a scare at Burnaby Village Museum, young visitors can trick-or-treat and have some Halloween fun at the Carousel while the braver souls can take a ghost walk around the historic and, possibly, haunted buildings.

Roar: The BC Lions turn their claws toward the Edmonton Eskimos as they visit BC Place on Friday night at 7pm

Diva: Experience the music of the night as Sarah Brightman displays her vocal prowess at Rogers Arena on Friday night.

Country: Chart topping trio the Dixie Chicks bring their pop/country hits to Rogers Arena on Saturday night

Drag: Don your best costume and head upstairs to Oasis Ultra Lounge on Saturday night for monroe: Halloween hosted by Iona Whipp, Jaylene & Kristina Cash

Dance: Ginger 62 decks the halls with bows of gory for District:Halloween as Marcello, Adam Dreaddy and Dre Morel keep the party going

Kicks: With the playoffs out of reach, the season wraps up for the Vancouver Whitecaps on Sunday as they play host to Colorado Rapids at BC Place at 5pm

Picks Of The Week – October 9, 2013

It’s mid-October and the leaves are turning with the weather and the time for Turkey has arrived with another long weekend full of food, family and fun.  If you’re not off visiting family, running the Goodlife Fitness Victoria Marathon or BMO Okanagan Marathon get out there and have some fun.

RebaConcert: Looking for some Country music, head out to the country and catch Reba McEntire at the Abbotsford Entertainment & Sports Centre

Puck: After a good start to their home season last week, the Vancouver Canucks host San Jose Sharks on Thursday at 7pm and Montreal Canadiens on Saturday at 7pm at Rogers Arena.

Roar: RuffWild on Friday at The Pint, kicks off WildBear Weekend, a weekend long fundraiser for Camp Moomba, filled with entertainment and activities to amuse your inner beast.

Rock: Local rock legends 54-40 play the Commodore for their 50th time on Saturday night.

Drag: Lovers of RuPaul’s Drag Race will want to head to Oasis on Saturday night as Monroe presents Alyssa Edwards 

Anniversary: The Cobalt is the place to be to celebrate with Hustla: 2 Year Anniversary Throwdown on Saturday night

Late Night:  To keep partying to the wee hours head to United: Thanksgiving w/ DJ Eddie Martinez & Nick Bertossi at Gorg-O-Mish

Picks Of The Week: April 3, 2013

There’s no fooling as we begin April with the glitz and glamour of Bollywood, 3 nights of Canucks and lots more happening around town.

Showbiz: Bollywood style and extravaganza are the big event this week as the first ever Times Of India Film Awards (TOIFA) gets underway in Vancouver with a massive concert on Thursday at Pacific Coliseum, Friday brings out the stars for the technical awards at the VCC then the red carpet is rolled out Saturday for the inaugural awards presentations at BC Place.

Slam: The other big event of the weekend is the return of the Davis Cup to Vancouver’s Thunderbird Sports Arena at UBC as Canada takes on Italy in Quarterfinal tennis action

Sport: Vancouver Canucks take to the ice at Rogers Arena for 3 home games this week; April 4, April 6 and April 8th

Scene: Is dancing the night away at Liberace Thursdays at Celebrities didn’t wear you out, Oasis Ultra Lounge keeps up the hype of their recent renovations with Friday night’s – Attic / Base featuring DJs Adam Dreaddy and Jay Douglas.

Stage: My Turquoise Years starts April 4th at The Arts Club Theatre Company – Granville Island Stage.

Show: Live at The Biltmore Cabaret features The Harpoonist & The Axe Murderer for a gig on Saturday April 6th.

Supper: All this month Vancouver’s Provence Restaurants, Marinaside in Yaletown and Mediterranean Grill in Point Grey are featuring a French Tradition of Poisson d’Avril, literally April’s Fish. It’s month-long feature celebrating all things ‘fish’ with a $45 prix-fixe menu at both restaurants.

 

Picks Of The Week – March 27, 2013

It’s officially spring and Easter Weekend is upon us! A 4 day weekend for many will mean a getaway or some family fun to wrap up spring break. Our mindframe is shifting to shed the winter blahs and perk up with the brighter weather.

Stanley Park: the Easter Train chugs its way around the Stanley Park miniature railway until Monday April 1st. Bring a basket for Easter egg hunting

Scene: Oasis Ultra Lounge uncovers their renovations to show off their sleek new look and a new night – Attic / Base featuring DJs Adam Dreaddy and Jay Douglas every Friday night.

Sculpture: Support the Vancouver Food Bank and experience a unique art showcase made entirely of canned goods, Canstruction Vancouver continues until April 3rd, in Pacific Centre, Four Seasons Hotel and the Pendulum Art Gallery

Stage: Inspired by the film, Billy Elliott The Musical dances across the Orpheum stage starting on April 2nd for 8 performances

Spin: Superstar DJ & remixer DJ Pornstar kicks off the long weekend with a CD Release party at Liberace Thursdays at Celebrities

Show: No fooling, Rihanna shines like a Diamond at Rogers Arena on Monday April 1

Summer Night Market runs until September 16th on Vulcan Way, Richmond Night Market has a new home near Bridgeport Station at River Rock Resort and Chinatown Night Market is at home in downtown Vancouver.
– spend your summer days at one of Vancouver’s great Farmer’s Markets; Main Street on Wednesdays, West End and Trout Lake Markets on Saturdays with Kitsilano Market on Sundays
– at Vancouver Art Gallery : Offsite on West Georgia at the Shangri-la Hotel courtyard, until Sept 16th, is a large scale wooden tableau by Kota Ezawa
– The Vancouver Art Gallery indoors welcomes it’s summer exhibit, Collecting Matise and Modern Masters: The Cone Sisters of Baltimore, highlighting one of the foremost private collections of early European Modernism.  Meanwhile the Gallery’s exhibition Emily Carr and the Theatre of Transcendence continues all summer as does their ‘Next Series of New Artists from the Pacific Rim‘ – Fifth Night by Yang Fudong, a multi-channel video installation. Spiritlands: t/here: Marian Penner Bancroft Selected Photo Works 1975-2000, a photo exhibit by the Vancouver photographer.  Through A Glass, Darkly offers diverse perspectives on perception with specific reference to memory and loss.
