5 Mother’s Day Picks for 2019 That Aren’t Brunch

This Sunday, much of the world celebrates Mother’s Day. While each country & culture has its own traditions, here in North America, the 2nd Sunday in May usually includes brunch, flowers & family.

While a family meal with the matriarch is common, you might be looking for a different option to celebrate Mom. Here’s a five options for Mother’s Day, May 12, 2019, in Metro Vancouver that don’t include making reservations but do included doing something with Mom.

RUN: Blueshore Financial Mother’s Day Run presented by Westin Bayshore: start the day with a 3k, 5k, 10k family fun run / walk through scenic Stanley Park, from Ceperley Field to Coal Harbour with a festival-like wrap up at the finish line or brunch at Westin Bayshore.

LAUGH: Vancouver TheatreSports celebrates Moms everywhere with its ‘mother of all Mother’s Day shows’ – MOM=WOW – a special, one-performance-only, Mom-themed show just for her at 4:00pm, after toast mom with a sip and the sunny views of the marina from the Neil Macrae Bar & Lounge.

MUSEUM: Celebrate Mom at Burnaby Village Museum, from 11am to 4:30pm, with a day packed with special activities, exhibitions and crafts planned with Moms and families in mind, top off your visit with a visit to the Ice Cream Parlour for a slice of Mother’s Day lavender cheesecake & tea.

TREES: If you’ve taken Mom for a visit to enjoy the gardens of Queen Elizabeth Park, enhance your own urban forest with the Vancouver Park Board Tree Sale, any unclaimed or unpurchased trees from the online sale may be purchased for cash on between 2-4pm at Nat Bailey Stadium parking lot.

MATINEE: Vancouver Academy of Music (VAM) Symphony Orchestra, joined by internationally renowned pianist and VAM alumnus Jon Kimura Parker, brings its season to a close with a riveting performance of Stravinsky’s vibrant, folk-inspired Suite from The Firebird, at The Orpheum at 2pm.

ROVE A Mount Pleasant Art Walk

This Friday evening, ROVE A Mount Pleasant Art Walk, invites you to explore Mount Pleasant and the neighbourhood’s art scene. ROVE is a one-night art event that designates a path for people to explore select galleries and art studios within a short walk or cycle from one another.

The free event includes several coordinated openings in a single evening within galleries, studios and creative spaces including; grunt gallery, MAKE, LPY Studios, Gene Studios, Kafka’s, Omaha Studios, Burrard Arts Foundation and Field Contemporary.  Pick up a ROVE map at one of the spaces, then head out and discover a diverse range of artwork and meet the artists in person.

ROVE takes place place from 6pm until 10pm, tomorrow, Friday, September 25th with an after party at the Projection Room (above The Fox Cabaret) starting at 10pm until late. Guests can show their ROVE map to gain free admissions to the Projection Room.

Hunt for the Underwear Affair 2013

UnderwearaffairOnce again runners will be dropping their pants and sprinting through the city in the annual Underwear Affair. Benefiting the BC Cancer Foundation, Underwear Affair’s goal is to draw attention to cancers below the belt – prostate, colorectal, ovarian, testicular, bladder, cervical, and uterine.
The 10km run and 5km walk are joined by the new event Booty Hunt, an urban scavenger hunt through the streets of the city looking for a cure to the below-the-belt cancers. Grab your whole gang of BFFs, work friends, workout buddies, booty calls (especially them), significant others, landlord, frenemies, anyone and everyone and hit the streets! Underwear Affair events start off from Lot 6C – 88 Pacific Boulevard (Next to Roger’s Arena), Booty Hunt competitors check-in at 1pm before being released on the streets at 2pm. Run and walk check-in starts at 3:30pm, stretching exercises happen at 5:45pm then the run starts at 6:00pm followed by the walk.
So don’t be alarmed if you are passed on the street by someone, or a whole bunch of someones, in their skivvies. Cheer them on!

Registration for Underwear Affair 2013 is still open, if you can’t participate on the day you can still support the cause by pledging to one of the competitors fundraising efforts. Underwear Affair 2012

Don’t be alarmed if you see hundreds of people running past in their underwear or some crazy, skimpy costume today, the heat hasn’t gotten to them, they’re participating in The Underwear Affair.
Bringing awareness to Cancers ‘below the belt’ The Underwear Affair is a fun 5km walk / 10km run and fundraiser. You can register at the event which takes place today at at new location than years past: Lot 6C – 88 Pacific Boulevard (Next to Roger’s Arena) check-in starts at 3:30pm. There’s a Costume Contest at 4:45pm and the race starts at 6:00pm. Even if you’re not a runner you can still come out and help cheer them on, with me. Plus there’s still a bit of time to pledge to donate to the runner’s personal fundraising goals, like my friends’ Brian, Alex and Lila
