Blue Rodeo – January 26/27, 2016 – Orpheum Theatre
Last night, Blue Rodeo wrapped the last of a pair of sold out shows at Vancouver’s Orpheum Theatre. Coming up on their 30th anniversary, the icons of Canadiana didn’t disappoint their fans as they filled the theatre with their vast catalogue.
The consummate performers, leads Jim Cuddy and Greg Keelor sounded pitch perfect, as though no time had passed over their vocal chords, and without even a hint of Keelor’s hearing issues. Unlike other acts who began in the mid 80s, and are now on the comeback trail, there’s nothing retro feeling about the Blue Rodeo set, other than your memories. No pretence or clinging to a by-gone era, the band has always been unassuming with a ‘guys-next-door’ vibe that makes them so endearing to audiences.
Amongst their hits like; “Til I Am Myself Again”, “What Am I Doing Here”, “How Long” and “Diamond Mine” they played a selection of new tracks which were slightly more mature pop sound to them, with a more upbeat tempo and harmonies leaving the audience looking forward to a new album.
Saving the classic “Try” for near the end of the 2 hour set, it was impressive that the upright piano onstage was used just for that one track and Jim Cuddy’s lead vocals sounded crystal clear as he filled the Orpheum with his majestic performance.
Blue Rodeo continue their Canadian Tour in Victoria tonight before heading back east in February. Try to catch them if you can!
