The American Jazz great, John Coltrane, was born this week, September 23, 1926. To celebrate this centennial year, Coastal Jazz hosts a pair of performances to honour the influential saxophonist, bandleader, and composer.
Ravi Coltrane Quartet: Centennial Celebration

Ravi Coltrane Quartet performs a special one-night-only Centennial Performance at St. Andrew’s-Wesley United Church. Six decades after its release, John Coltrane’s 1965 A Love Supreme remains one of the most revered achievements in music history. For this performance, John Coltrane’s son, Ravi, himself a Grammy-nominated saxophonist, composer, and bandleader, leads his quartet – David Virelles on piano, Dezron Douglas on bass, and Johnathan Blake on drums- join Ravi on tenor and soprano saxophone as they tackle a powerful live interpretation of his father’s supreme masterpiece.
As the son of jazz musicians, John and Alice Coltrane, Ravi carries a lineage that runs through both of his parents’ work. This landmark concert with the Ravi Coltrane Quartet offers Vancouver audiences an intimate and profound encounter with jazz royalty, honouring a sacred musical legacy carried forward by the family that lived it.

From that moment, we knew we wanted to bring this remarkable performance to Vancouver—and we’re thrilled that it will take place in the beautiful setting of a church, no less! Branford Marsalis & Dianne Reeves Celebrate John Coltrane

Coastal Jazz and the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts at UBC co-present Branford Marsalis and Dianne Reeves Celebrate John Coltrane at the Chan Shun Concert Hall.
Adding their own Coltrane celebrations, National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters Branford Marsalis and Dianne Reeves together with the celebrated Branford Marsalis Quartet, the legendary duo will revisit John Coltrane’s tender, timeless 1963 collaboration with vocalist Johnny Hartman, Dedicated to You. Although both artists have performed separately with Coastal Jazz and the Vancouver International Jazz Festival. This Chan Shun Concert Hall performance brings two of modern jazz’s most revered artists together for their first collaborative performance in Vancouver.
