Zee Zee Theatre is bringing one of musical theatre’s most beloved cult classics to Vancouver! John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask’s Hedwig and the Angry Inch runs November 12–29 at VIVO Media Arts Centre, accompanied by a live band bringing the electrifying rock score to life with a distinctly Vancouver perspective.
Take a rock concert, add comedy, mix in a heartbreakingly honest confessional, to create an outrageously loud, queer yet decidedly human story of a singular performer navigating love, identity, rejection, and the complicated search for belonging. Since its 1998 Off-Broadway opening and 25 years on from the feature film cemented its cult status, Hedwig’s themes of self-discovery and radical acceptance remain as resonant as ever.
As Hedwig, Jordan Stanley, leads the production, the genderfluid actor-musician’s career runs from Vancouver to New York, including originating a role in the Off-Broadway production of The Lightning Thief, alongside appearances in Jersey Boys, Waitress, and Yellowjackets. Vancouver-based queer multidisciplinary artist, Madeleine Humeny plays Yitzhak, Hedwig’s assistant, back-up singer and husband.
The production is directed by Cameron Mackenzie, founder of Zee Zee Theatre and known to Vancouver audiences as drag performer Isolde N. Barron, the Queen of East Van. With deep roots in Vancouver’s queer arts community, Mackenzie brings a particularly compelling local perspective to this iconic work. With Brendan Steele’s music direction this intimate, high-energy production celebrates the transformative power of music, performance, and finding the courage to be yourself.
Zee Zee Theatre’s production of Hedwig and the Angry Inch runs November 12–29, 2026 at VIVO Media Arts Centre, 2625 Kaslo Street. Audiences are encouraged to arrive early for Hedwig’s Happy Hour at Hedwig’s “Hole in the Wall”. The bar will be open throughout the performance. A black-and-white dress code is suggested for those ready to embrace the Hedwig aesthetic. With VIP seating reserved for those that manage a monochromatic “lewk”.
