Dumb Instrument Dance presents Cobalt & Crone a presentation of new solo works, September 20-24 and September 27-October 1.
Audiences will be treated to a full-evening of new solo works, choreographed and performed by Ziyian Kwan and Shion Skye Carter, with original music by Stefan Nazarevih and Jo Hirabayashi.
In a nod to the unorthodox, the artists traverse a 3-generation divide, bringing their distinct signatures into conversation. The intimate performances for only 25 audience members at time, Cobalt & Crone promises to be an undulating tapestry of sound and movement.
Presented at Dumb Instrument Dance’s Morrow, a cultural hub, at 910 Richards Street, that supports and curates the work of artists from across genres. Morrow also features a gallery for artists from dance, theatre, music, literature and the visual arts – a place to share and sell material creations, and receive a share of profits.
Ziyian Kwan says “Crone pulses in my body as curiosity about aging and transformation. At 54, I reject the notion that any person has a best-before date. If I’m to join the ranks as a womxn and performer whom dominant ageist culture relegates as invisible, I’m going to do it as intrepid femme, as queer hag, as playful sorceress who dreams into being, the aliveness of art. I think of this new work as a rite of passage; although it stems from a personal reckoning, it extends outwards to offer that whatever we’re negotiating, we can move with defiance and acceptance to arrive at intimacy with self, as a homebase from which we attend our care for humanity. “
“Through its lush regality, Cobalt reflects the vibrant pigmented abundance that I strive to feel in my body, a body that I constantly scrutinize and critique; a body that doesn’t always feel like home. Moving through time from my childhood to the future, I oscillate between these portraits of self, attempting to succeed in the impossible task of existing at multiple ages, multiple identities, all at one moment” says Shion Skye Carter.
