Marina & The Diamonds – Commodore Ballroom – May 3, 2013
Friday night, Welsh singer-songwriter Marina & The Diamonds filled Vancouver’s Commodore Ballroom with a multitude of adoring fans. The room was ready to have a good time and the artist and her backing band more than lived up to their expectations. On tour promoting her latest album, “Electra Heart“, Marina bounded on stage dressed as a bride and dancing with a mannequin groom for her first song before hanging up the veil and getting the audience bouncing on their feet. Her fun and frivolous stage presence kept the atmosphere light and engaged throughout the set. A couple of costume changes allowed the band to keep up the tempo with musical interludes before Marina returned to dance again. A couple of tracks sung while playing the piano slowed the tempo slightly and gave the band a break.
Witty banter and personality easily brought the energy back up after the piano tunes. While the audience continually sang along, their participation ramped up for hits like ‘Primadonna’, ‘I Am Not A Robot’ and ‘Radioactive’. I’m sure the audience could’ve gone all night after they chanted Marina back onstage for her encore, hoping for much more Marina & The Diamonds.
