The longest running agricultural fair in Western Canada held its 144th edition this past weekend. Saanich Fair has been a Labour Day tradition for generations and still retains many of those aspects that made the fair popular for our parents and grandparents. Animal exhibits, horse driving competitions, 4-H shows, baking competitions, home preserving, biggest pumpkin, garden produce competitions are all on display. With the trends in eating local and organic, the fair has seen a resurgence in interest in some categories, like preserving, winemaking or honey/beekeeping. There really is something for everyone to enjoy at the Fair. Along with the agricultural country Fair a midway, farmers market, selling lots of local produce and products from around the fertile Saanich Peninsula, and the usual plethora of Fair foods makes it easy to spend the whole day at the Saanich Fair.
Next Labour Day long weekend, think about heading to Vancouver Island and enjoying a great day out at the 145th Saanich Fair.
