The Movie Star, a new comedy from Black Box Theatre Co., the company behind The Play That Goes Wrong and Wonderwall, comes to Waterfront Theatre from August 13 to 23.

Written and produced by James Barclay, co-founder of Black Box Theatre Co. The Movie Star tell the story of Hollywood superstar Cole Gray (played by Barclay) who after landing the role of James Bond, sabotages his career with one hilarious, alcohol-fueled, late-night tweet. Canceled by sunrise and burdened by a history of DUIs and paparazzi brawls, Cole is sentenced to 500 hours of community service at a homeless shelter run by his manager’s estranged sister. What starts off as a PR stunt eventually evolves into a genuine journey of redemption when Cole decides to help the residents stage a play, and discovers that purpose might just shine brighter than fame.
Black Box Artistic Director Tracy Labrosse directs the limited 10 show run at the intimate Waterfront Theatre, leading a cast including: Christi Arellano, Andrew Kenny, Tom Kavadias, Ashley Kim, and Reid Anderson. Recent UBC graduate Ronica Huynh serving as Production Manager and Capilano University student Adam Crystal, in the Assistant Stage Manager position, round out the company.
Black Box Theatre Co. seeks to ignite change through art that challenges, connects, and enriches both our audiences and artists by delving into new creations, like Barclay’s Wonderwall and The Movie Star while also revitalizing well-known favourites, like last year’s The Play That Goes Wrong.
The Movie Star runs August 13 to 23, 2026 at Waterfront Theatre, 1412 Cartwright Street on Granville Island. Visit blackboxtheatre.ca for more information, showtimes and tickets
