The Firehall Arts Centre is just a week away from the world premiere of Canadian Psycho, running Tuesday, March 31 to Sunday, April 12.
There’s a lot of talk about diversity and inclusion these days, just how far should that extend?
Hollywood like to present itself as the frontrunner, but when it comes to one category of storylines there is still a telling lack of multiculturalism – the psychological crime thriller. These juicy, dark and complex roles usually come to screen based on stories about the world’s more infamous people – the American serial killer – still predominantly the domain of white men.
Canadian Psycho looks at one way to change that…
Directed by Jenna Rodgers, the multimedia solo show blends original electronic music, with dynamic movement and striking video design to tell this satirical story. Produced by Vancouver Asian Canadian Theatre (vAct) and ITSAZOO Productions, Canadian Psycho is a provocative takedown of the model minority myth and an unhinged interrogation of who gets to be seen, centered, and mythologized.

Playwright and performer Marlene Ginader adds, “Mostly, it’s about a half-Asian woman who’s frustrated by the lack of inclusion in the serial killer space, and is finally ready to do something about it.”
Also serving as the show’s composer, costumer, & co-projection designer, alongside Andie Lloyd, Ginader adds “the show explores themes of glorified violence, toxic masculinity, white-centred storytelling, bias in technology, and our cultural obsession with true crime.”
