KT Tunstall – Venue Nightclub – May 6, 2011
Scottish songstress made her third stop within a year to Vancouver recently for a sold out show at Venue. As always, KT was a delight as she wittily recounted stories about the songs and experiences on the road. This was a solo show, or at least only one solo human, as KT was also aided by her “Taiwanese friends”, a collection of samplers and sound effect equipment which helped create the appearance of a full band. While Tunstall is most at home on the guitar, three songs were piano based which allowed her to recount her childhood piano lessons as well as mention that her parents were along for this tour, their first trip on the road with their daughter.
Although officially in support of her most recent ablum, Tiger Suit, she also had a new EP to promote. The Scarlett Tulip is a 7 song acoustic EP recorded just for fans and for sale only at live gigs and online at kttustall.com. As she stated, the accoustic recording is simple and has “no bar code, just music with a picture on it, the way it should be”. That is also a good way to describe her music, simple, the way it should be. Already a truly great singer and songwriter, each time I see her live she proves to be an even better entertainer.
