In just 2 days, the Resort Municipality of Whistler will unfurl the rainbow flag as it welcomes Winter Pride 2013 from February 3 – 10. A fun filled week with dances, activities and performances and of course there will probably be some skiing and snowboarding thrown in too.
One of the big events within the week is the Mr Gay Canada (MGC) competition from Feb 5 – 7. The purpose of the competition is to provide an opportunity for young gay men to make a ‘difference’ and be accepted within their own communities. Through education and public performances, MGC’s goal is to help create positive, authentic and empowered role models that will be a champion for Gay Human Rights within each of the competitors own community. For the contestant chosen to be Mr Gay Canada these public performances along with outreach and educational programs, will raise awareness of issues pertinent to young gay men, such as safe sex awareness, bullying and self-acceptance.
The competition will be intense three days including a photo challenge, sports challenge, fashion show/run way challenge, swim suit challenge, public speaking. Many of the competition events will be held in conjunction with other WinterPRIDE events: Tuesday, Feb. 5th line dancing at the Cowboy Party at Buffalo Bill’s from 9PM-Late; Wednesday, Feb. 6th Human Rights seminar, public speaking seminar, sports challenge at Zoom Ziplines. Thursday, Feb. 7th – Mr. Gay Canada Grand Finale & Fashion Show at Whistler Conference Centre from 8PM-10PM with celebrity judges actor Charlie David and RuPaul Drag Race All-Star Winner, Chad Michaels. The winner of Mr. Gay Canada 2013 will earn the right to represent Canada at the World Finales in Antwerp, Belgium during the WorldOutgames and Mr. Gay World competition August 1-5, 2013.
The public is also encouraged to participate in the selection of Mr Gay Canada by voting online for their favourite for People Choice contestant, like my friend Josh Rimer(pictured right).
Online voting is open now, until the last day of competition so log on now and vote.
Don’t just take my word for it, watch Josh’s video message to the Mr Gay Canada voters
