On February 9th, Sound the Alarm: Music/Theatre (STA) presents EBONY ROOTS: Concert, Part 2.
The second presentation of the two-part concert project (following the December 2nd Part 1) will take place in the Performance Centre at Roundhouse Community Arts & Recreation Centre in Yaletown.
EBONY ROOTS: Concert (Part 2) is a powerful and intimate music experience that journeys through the evolving emancipation of Black identity and culture from the North American perspective starting with prison work-songs, through passionate spirituals, into iconic songs from the stage (Musical Theatre/Opera), and arriving at the emergence of Black Soul, R&B, Blues and Motown.
“Following the incredibly successful and joyous Part 1 concert in December, we are honoured to present EBONY ROOTS: Concert (Part 2) in Vancouver,” said Alan Corbishley, Sound the Alarm: Music/Theatre’s Artistic Director. “This project has been over a year in the making after I was first approached by co-producer Brandon Thornhill with a vision to create and produce a concert celebrating his Black culture. The incredible performers we have gathered are ready to take the audience on an incredible journey through the roots, foundations, and legacies of Black music/culture.”
“I’m so proud of the program that we presented on December 2nd, and I’m extremely excited and privileged to be performing the full Ebony Roots concert on February 9th with my talented colleagues! Our program will feature repertoire that encompasses the struggle and resilience of our people and our ancestry, including music with its roots right here in Vancouver. We will be paying a small tribute to African descent artists from Vancouver (or connections to) who paved the way for black musicians – artists such as Jayson Hoover, Bobby Taylor, and Jimi Hendrix. I am so grateful for the support of Sound the Alarm: Music/Theatre whose passion for this project has been integral in bringing this concept to life.”- Brandon Thornhill, project producer and designer.
Previewed in December’s EBONY ROOTS: Concert Part 1, this performance at Roundhouse is the fully designed concert project, and showcases the musical talents of the EBONY ROOTS core artistic team. Artists include Brandon Thornhill (Vocalist), Carlos Joe Costa (Percussion/Flute), Leo D.E Johnson (Vocalist/Guitar), Olaf de Shield (Guitars/Vocalist), Russell Jackson (Bass/Vocalist), Wayne Stewart (Keyboard/Vocalist).
