Surfer Blood – Commodore Ballroom – May 31, 2013
Coming from Florida, Surfer Blood are surrounded by sun, sand and surf on a regular basis and that is reflected in their upbeat, pop infused rock stylings. Like the second coming of the Beach Boys albeit with a harder edge, Surfer Blood are able to find a balance between rock and pop at the same time. While they speak relatively few words their effervescent personalities say quite a lot in their stage presence.
Although they are a support act, for Foals, on this tour, they deserve to be headliners and have an audience of their own fans. For this gig, the crowd was a bit light to begin but grew and warmed to Surfer Blood as their set played on. They were able to win the audience over with tracks from their 2010 release, Astro Coast
as well as testing new material from their forthcoming album, Pythons
(due for release June 11). For the single “Take It Easy”, proclaimed to be one of their favourites, lead singer John Paul Pitts donned cat whiskers and sang between puffs on his electronic cigarette, all while venturing into the stage pit in front of the audience. Lighthearted antics like these endear the quartet even further to the crowd so by the end of their hour long set the, now full, room was bouncing.
