September 28th, the Massey Theatre welcomes the incredible sights and sounds of the 13th Annual Mushtari Begum Festival. Audiences will be transported by the timeless and ancient forms of Indian classical music and dance.
Founded by New Westminster’s own Cassius Khan and Amika Kushwaha, Mushtari Begum Festival of Indian Classical Music and Dance is a tribute to Khan’s guru, the late Ghazal Queen Mushtari Begum.
A celebration of performing arts excellence and community connection, for the 13th year the Festival kicks off the Massey Theatre’s performance season. Internationally renowned artists collaborate on beautiful music in a way that is simultaneously heightened and approachable, this one-of-a-kind festival is a space where music and dance holds no barrier for all to appreciate.
The Mushtari Begum Festival showcases a line-up including some of the finest Canadian and Indian artists. Headlining performances will be given by Western Canadian Music Award nominees Cassius Khan and Amika Kushwaha. Khan sings Ghazals while simultaneously playing the Tabla, and Kushwaha will serenade all with her melodious Harmonium. Kathak dancer Prajakta Potnis Trehan will enthrall the audience with her mind blowing Kathak performance alongside Baljit Singh’s sonorous and haunting Dilruba. Mridangam artist Keerthy Raghavan, Karnatic classical vocalist Remya Rajiv, and Karnatic Violinist Shriram Rajagopalan will delight audiences with their traditional South Indian classical music performance. Pandit Salil Bhatt will captivate the audience with the Satvik Veena, the 20-stringed instrument he invented.
Each artist will perform exquisite and traditional numbers in their respective art forms, both solo and collaboratively.
All are welcomed and encouraged to join the celebration of Indian classical music, dance and the performing arts at the Mushtari Begum Festival
