
Voices will ring out across Deer Lake Park when Vancouver Opera welcomes the return of Opera In The Park on Sunday July 16th. Presented with the City of Burnaby, the free, family friendly event features some of the incredible arias and duets from Vancouver Opera’s upcoming 2023-2024 season productions; The Magic Flute, Don Pasquale and Carmen.
Vancouver Opera Music Director Emeritus Jonathan Darlington conducts the Vancouver Opera Orchestra alongside Chorus Director Tina Chang on the Deer Lake Mainstage for Opera in the Park. The unforgettable evening concert features singers including Jonelle Sills (Soprano), Magda How (Soprano), Emma Parkinson (Mezzo), Andrew Haji (Tenor) and Clarence Frazer (Baritone). Alongside the Vancouver Opera Chorus the singers will perform instantly recognizable classics like Habanera from Bizet’s Carmen, the Queen of the Night’s hair-raising aria from Mozart’s The Magic Flute, and highlights from Gaetano Donizetti’s triumph of the comedic opera buffa style, Don Pasquale.
“We are delighted to return to Deer Lake Park for Opera in the Park,” said Tom Wright, Vancouver Opera General Director. “This free summer concert is a continuation of our partnership with the City of Burnaby following our incredibly successful concert last summer. Our July 16 event includes a day filled with performances for music lovers of all ages with plenty of activities for families. The concert is a celebration of familiar favourites from our upcoming season productions.”

The 2023 Opera in the Park concert begins at 7:30pm with a special welcome ceremony and land acknowledgement. Starting at 3pm, fun and activities make Opera in the Park great afternoon out for all the family; including face-painting, musical games, circus characters, and giveaways. Concertgoers are encouraged to enjoy a high energy pre-concert celebration of the human voice featuring Indigenous artists, JUNO-nominated choral performers musica intima and more from 5:45pm to 6:30pm.
Opera in the Park is free to attend, at Deer Lake Park, Burnaby 6450 Deer Lake Avenue. Parking is limited, so guests are encouraged to arrive early. and are welcome to bring their blankets and lawn chairs but leave large tents and umbrellas at home. Opera in the Park attendees can bring their own snacks or visit the on-site food trucks for food and refreshments.
Vancouver Opera recently announced 2023-2024 season includes The Magic Flute, Don Pasquale and Carmen, subscriptions are available now with single tickets on sale July 12, 2023.
