The Massey Theatre is preparing to welcome a stunning visual experience for audiences of all ages, Ballet Jörgen’s Cinderella. Taking the stage Saturday February 18th, Artistic Director Bengt Jörgen’s Cinderella is a mesmerizing and innovative take on the classic fairy tale.
Toronto-based Ballet Jörgen’s choreography balances the fairy tale elements of the story with a contemporary, even realistic, treatment of Cinderella, her family relationships and struggles – and her pursuit of true love. Combining classic ballet with modern twists, Jörgen builds a more realistic and human look at Cinderella and her circumstances, and then uses these scenes to both counterpoint and highlight the magical aspects of the story. With stunning visuals featuring 16 dancers plus local participation, this well-loved tale never fails to leave audiences of all ages in awe.
“Cinderella is one of Ballet Jörgen’s most popular classical ballets and is one of my personal favourites. Cinderella is a touching ballet, but also makes people laugh and has an uplifting quality to it. Set to beautiful music by Sergei Prokofiev, it is the epitome of classical ballet,” Bengt Jörgen, C.M., Artistic Director
Glenn Davidson’s set design creates a fantastical environment based on the idea of the natural world reclaiming human-made structures. Inspiration for the set pieces is drawn from ice storms and old growth forests. Costume designs by Robert Doyle playfully echo each character’s personality.
Currently celebrating its 32nd season, Ballet Jörgen is one of Canada’s largest dance companies. It is also one of the country’s leading touring company, bringing professional ballet to communities of all sizes all across the country. Ballet Jörgen’s Cinderella comes to New Westminster’s Massey Theatre for one night only, February 18, 2023, find details and tickets at masseytheatre.com
