Every summer, Carnaval del Sol brings the sounds, flavours and dances of Latin America to the people of Metro Vancouver. This year’s 12 annual summer celebrations are a little different, taking place at home, at a local restaurants, or at smaller in-person events in Vancouver and the North Shore, from July 15 to August 9.

Carnaval del Sol has carefully transformed the festival to to ensure maximum joy while staying safe. Organizers have unveiled new, fun, and delicious events for the summer as they announceed partnerships with over a dozen local restaurants and artists to support them during these challenging times.
“Carnaval del Sol is a celebration of life, diversity and human connection; something our community needs more than ever. We found a way to connect and celebrate while staying safe, entertained, and positive. This year you will get to experience Latin America from your own home or at one of our local events. We wish to add our part to the resiliency this beautiful city has shown” says Paola Murillo, Latincouver Executive Director.
Join in a new online series “Across the Americas”, a six-episode series showcasing Latin American culture through music, cooking demos, dance performances, art exhibits, exquisite travel destinations, social innovation initiatives, and much more. Each episode will feature local, national, and international Latin talent from Vancouver to Patagonia and back. Episodes will feature artists like Lila Downs (MEX), Nación Ekeko (ARG), Nortec: Bostich + Fussible (MEX), Bareto (PER), Mazacote (NIC/CAN), Martha Chaves (CAN), Boogat (CAN), Pedrina (COL), Ramón Chicharrón (COL/CAN), Jess Salomon (CAN), Sambacouver (BRA/CAN) and many others.
From July 18 to August 4, Latin American Experience will present four different events, two online and two offline:
- Art Experience & Blockchain [ONLINE EVENT] – (On July 18, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am PST) an interactive ONLINE workshop via Zoom about art and technology with Colombian-born New York-based artist Jessica Angel.
- Discovering Latin America’s Indigenous Territories [ONLINE EVENT] – (On July 25, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. PST) an online event showcasing the stories and lives of women from Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Vancouver.
- Latin American Women Flourishing in Canada [LIVE EVENT] – (On July 30, from 5:30 to 9:00 pm. PST) at the Loft Lounge at 203-1184 Denman Street. It is a workshop featuring the sharing of stories by Latin American women and a panel discussion about “Feminism and Leadership.”
- Flamenco Night [LIVE EVENT] – (On August 4, from 5:30 to 8:00 pm. PST) featuring singing, dancing, and physical distancing between dance couples at the Granville Island Pavilion.
Carnaval del Sol also comes to Restaurants around Metro Vancouver August 7th to 9th. An exciting and delicious collaboration to support local restaurants and artists. Participating restaurants include: La Taquería (Mexican), Boteco Brasil Food (Brazilian), Cafe Oca Brazilian Bistro (Brazilian), The Cambie Bar & Grill (Bar Grill), Sal y Limon (Mexican), The Loft Lounge (Caribbean), Bodega On Main (Spanish), Zocalo Modern Cantina (Mexican), La Casita Restaurant (Mexican), Provence Marinaside (Mediterranean), Tequila Cocina (Mexican), Charqui (Caribbean), and La Cantina (Mexican).
On the North Shore from August 7 to 9 a mini carnaval or Carnavalito del Sol will fill the Lonsdale Quay Market with Latin American food, music, and culture.
