Carousel Theatre for Young People (CTYP) on Granville Island is the latest theatre organization to return to the stage with live in-person performances. After a digital streaming version in 2020, CTYP’s annual Teen Shakespeare Program returns with a week of live performances of The Tempest from July 31 to August 7 featuring audiences outdoors in Ron Basford Park located next to Performance Works on Granville Island.
CTYP is Vancouver’s only mainstage theatre company for young audiences with a mission is to provide theatrical experiences with lasting impact for young people, families, and artists.
The Tempest is created and performed by CTYP’s Teen Shakespeare Ensemble of students and emerging young artists. Performers from ages 14 to 17 have been busy rehearsing hard in anticipation of performing in front of live audiences for the first time since the pandemic in their creatively tailored version of Shakespeare’s 17th century shipwrecked tale.

“I’m thrilled for both the return of live theatre as well as having the opportunity to shepherd such creative and young talent, interpreting the Bard’s stormiest comedy, “ says Teen Shakespeare lead instructor Leslie Dos Remedios
The Tempest is the first performance in CTYP’s upcoming 2021/22 season of live theatre for the next year with further shows to be announced soon.
Carousel Theatre for Young People performances of The Tempest take place at 7:30pm, July 30 (preview), July 31 and August 3-7, 2021 at Ron Basford Park on Granville Island. The performance is recommended for ages 6+ and runs 75 minutes, without intermission. A limited amount of seating is available to book online.
CTYP and Granville Island are observing all necessary COVID-19 safety protocols and guidelines in accordance with BC’s Restart Plan including physical distancing measures, limited seating outdoors, minimal contact points, and no concession sales this year.
