Emerging in the 1960s from Black, Latinx, Trans and Queer communities in Harlem – Ballroom culture is perhaps best known for Vogue – a highly stylized competitive dance form which demands symmetry, precision and grace – and its spirit of joyful extravagance covering for its defiant resistance to oppression.
MY HOUSE is a collaboration between The Dance Centre and the Global Dance Connections Series, FakeKnot, the piece features Escamillan, Icon Snoopy 007 Basquiat (Toronto), Legendary Brian 007 (Montreal), and Father Jaws Siriano Balenciaga (Toronto) along with local ballrooms commentators and DJ. The spirited, playful production uses music and movement that carries the liberating truth of being fully oneself on the floor.
