The Arts Club Theatre Company’s Artistic Director Ashlie Corcoran and Executive Director Peter Cathie White have announced the 2022–2023 season lineup signalling a full return to all three Arts Club venues—the Stanley Industrial Alliance stage, the Granville Island Stage, and the Newmont Stage at the BMO Theatre Centre—for their 59th season.
In celebration of being back “Alive on Three Stages,” Corcoran said, “I hope that our audiences find in this programming the Arts Club’s desire to embrace the identities and idiosyncrasies of our three venues: the size and scale of the Stanley, the warmth and intimacy of Granville Island, and the delight of the unexpected at the Newmont.”
Cathie White added, “We want to highlight the joy, tactility, and participatory nature that is unique to theatre. Patrons may recognize some familiar names and titles—a priority this season is to return as much work as possible to the many artists who had their livelihoods pulled out from beneath them two years ago.”
The 2022–2023 season will kick off in September at the Arts Club’s flagship venue, the Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage, with Mischief Theatre Worldwide’s hilarious Peter Pan Goes Wrong, a North American premiere production in association with Citadel Theatre. Four more shows follow at the Stanley, including Forgiveness, a world premiere stage adaptation of Mark Sakamoto’s captivating family memoir by Hiro Kanagawa and co-commissioned with Theatre Calgary; an adaptation of Jane Austen’s Sense & Sensibility, and Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, the Tony Award–winning musical based on the life of the pop legend. As a winter treat, the Arts Club will bring back The Sound of Music, the enormously popular hit from the 2019–2020 season.
At the Arts Club’s Granville Island Stage, new works by local artists are highlighted, starting with Mom’s the Word: Talkin’ Turkey. This latest instalment from the beloved Vancouver-based Mom’s the Word Collective will carry audiences through the holidays. The Granville Island Series is bookended by Millions Dollar Quartet, an imagining of a session featuring Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, & Carl Perkins
Three shows will fill the Newmont Stage at the BMO Theatre Centre for the season, including Redbone Coonhound, by Amy Lee Lavoie and Omari Newton, a hard-hitting new comedy and world premiere of a script co-commissioned as part of a Rolling World Premiere with Tarragon Theatre and Imago Theatre.
Corcoran also named new Silver Commission recipients for the 2022–2023 season: Alexandra Lainfiestaas for Bella Luz, and Dave Deveau and Meghan Gardiner for Beaut.
